All of the above. That doesn't look like normal shedding...and I've never had a 7 month old have rampant shedding of even the normal adult kind.

I'm not sure if I can see properly but there is considerable thinning on the the elbow area, and on the sides just below the backbone and in front of the hind legs, where the waist is? Elbows could be rubbing on something but I don't see how that side area would. That doesn't look like any shed I've seen. That doesn't even look like Oban when he lost all his guard hairs. That looks like both undercoat and guard hairs both are coming out. I think I'd be Vetting for a skin scraping to see if some kind of bacterial skin infection or yeast problem is causing that.

Me neither, no furminator. I'd probably strip the coat with it.

I agree that doesn’t look like normal shedding, even in an adult.

Both my 7 month (today) puppies shed, one much more so than the other but both have nice thick coats with no thin spots - it’s like they replenish automatically. They are yellow too, and I’ve been told that yellows shed more in general. I’ve had several blacks in the past and never had shedding like you are seeing, especially at that age, without there being some underlying problem.

I'm not worried about the shedding as much as the dry skin. The picture I took is bad after looking at it again. The area on his hind is just the flash from the camera. I was trying to focus on the knee where he has been nibbling and looks a little bare. We will begin mixing in fish oil with his food.

I would take him to the vet for a skin scrapping to rule out anything bacterial or fungal. Some stuff, like mange, can be transmitted to humans. I'm not saying it's mange but it's just an example I thought of off the top of my head. Even when dogs have dry, itchy skin, they don't usually end up with thinning patches unless something else is going on.

Spoke to our vet on the phone this evening. We came to the conclusion it could be due to an allergy with some new duck treats or carrots. We started feeding him these duck treats as well as baby carrots roughly 10 days ago. It seems to make sense. He has been wanting to go outside every 30 mins even when he doesn't need to go potty and hasn't slept in our room recently. It's 20 degrees here and warm in our room at night (where he had been constantly scratching through the night) I bet skin is more irritated then and feels good with the cooler weather. She would like for us to monitor him for up to 2 weeks until that is all out of his system and give Benadryl as needed to help with itchiness.

Depending on how those duck treats are made, they could be very high in fat...increasing internal heat and predisposing to intestinal issues. And carrots have also been known to cause sensitivities.

Good thoughts that your elimination diet will do the trick.

Update: We brought Bo the the vet yesterday. All seems to be OK. No skin or other infections. Seems to be the dry air. Benadryl and fish oil have seemed to help in the past week. He weighs in at 65lbs at 7 1/2 months! He's looking great and appears he will be a big boy!
