    Puppy shedding

Hey all. We live in MN and have a 7 month old lab. I have a question regarding the amount of shedding he has. We have wood floors and white carpet which certainly doesn't help but it seems as if he sheds a lot! We brush him on a regular basis as well. He seems to have a few spots that he constantly nibbles at/scratches at so this could contribute to the amount of shedding as well. Any ideas? Is this normal? I can certainly rule out fleas and hot spots.

Labs shed all the time. And they blow their coat about 2 times a year. You will have hair on the ground at all times.

If he's nibbling spots, he could be dry, so you might want to consider a humidifier or adding fish oil to his diet. He could also not be tolerating some ingredient in his diet. Find something with NO chicken. That tends to be the bigger problem these days than grains.

We constantly have a humidifier running in our house. All he has known is Blue Buffalo chicken and rice. I would really hate to change his food on him now. We will try the fish oil first. His two spots are right above both of his his back legs right around his knees. His hair is starting to look sparse in those areas.

The furminator seems to have helped Murphy and his shedding. Like Jen said, there will be hair at all times.

Murph has had a problem with dry skin, so the vet recommended a bath using Selsun Blue. I have to say, that's helped with the itching/dry skin. Haven't tried the fish oil yet, but I heard coconut oil works just as well.

I'd try the selsun blue bath first. When you scrub, make sure you get down to the skin. I let it sit for 3-5mins and then rinse, then do it again. I really scrub too, not just a lather and immediately rinse. He loves it - it's like one giant scratching and massaging session!

Here is an idea of what we are dealing with. It's just this one particular area.

Daisy sheds substantially but not to the point of bald spots or thinning hair. Has the vet taken a look?

No vet trip yet. Just started really noticing in the last week or so. Our home has been dry as my wife and I both have gotten bloody noses recently. Other than that, we did get home some new, never bought before treats .

To help with humidity you can put a large pot of water on the stove and bring it to a simmer.

I would not use a Furminator, they strip the undercoat. Try adding good quality fish or coconut oil but definitely get that spot checked at the vet!
