    Puppy Transportation

Would like to hear from the Board how they transport their pup in the car? And what do you do as they grow older?

    Truly appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks!

We took one of our larger cat carriers just in case. But puppies rode home on my lap. OH drove. I feel it's a time to bond with puppy, after being yanked from Mum and siblings. We took collar and leash too, water and lots of clean up towels but never needed them. Jet slept all the way home. With Oban we had a big snow storm, the drive took twice as long, three hours total, and that little devil sat or stood on my lap all the way, looking out the window. Harbringer of things to come with him. With both my lap was covered by a thick old comforter to keep them cozy and soak up any accidents.

Check the link for how to transport at other times. When little I used the cat crate, they didn't know to stay in the back till they were bigger. I could strap the crate into my seat belt.

Luna rode home in the backseat in my lap, DH drove. She usually hangs out in the backseat now hooked in to a tether in the seatbelt. I don't crate her in the car because I have a Subaru Forester and our crate is a 42"... if I had a minivan or a larger SUV I don't know if I would, but would entertain the idea. Definitely check out the link Snowshoe posted- Center for Pet Safety is great. Their research showed that the safest harness for all sizes of dogs was the Sleepypod Clickit.

Hi... We drove 5 hours each way for Sophie! She started off in my husband's lap while I drove. We had put the back seat down, we have a hatchback Mazda... and then she crawled back there with toy and blanket the breeder gave us that had mommie's smell and her other litter mates... she slept.. never peed in the car.. or cried.. she was wonderful!!
What color did you decide?? Male or female?
    Good luck

My 1st one rode home in our lap on a 2 hour journey and he did fine. Our second was 12 weeks old and maybe less shy than Chase was. I had a 28" plastic dog crate that she rode home in. The largest crate that will fit in my small SUV is a 36" crate and only one can get in there. I did put Lark in the crate for maybe 6 months, with Chase in a harness, until I could see she'd be fine harnessed, too. Right now, one is usually in the back seat in a harness and one in the "way back" in a harness. Now that Lark is nearly 18 months old, maybe they can ride together in the way back section without her torturing Chase on the way. She does like to lie down and make herself comfortable, so I guess we'll see if Chase is scrunched up in a corner so her royal highness can recline in luxury. I have Roadie RoughRider harnesses.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Emma came home on my gf lap in the backseat I drove. Then when I would take her to work with me and around town when I was buy my self. I got her a soft side pet carrier that used for airplane travel.

When we got Nikko we sat with him in the back seat. When we got Mia she came with a 36" x 30" crate so she was crated. We plan on bringing a crate for pup next weekend but I doubt he will spend any time in it.

Jax was born just 20 mins away from us, short ride with him on my lap. Zeus was a 2 hr drive to get and the breeder insisted on crate since is was driving alone. Ginger and Chula were from the same breeder, 2 hr drive but ride home was on my lap. We don't crate in the car, they are in the back of the SUV, trips are always few mins. to lake or vet.

OMG, thanks so much. What a true love bug. I think that will be the way we bring our Black Male Lab home too. (Thanks Sophie's Mom for asking). Actually really lucky as we won't have a long drive to get him. I have my plastic carrier, which I transport my Flemish Rabbits, that will work for the Well Puppy Visit, and until, we decide what's going in back of the EL. We need to get the pup used to the car, as there are classes to go to, and I know my husband will enjoy the company when work takes him on long trips.

Thanks everyone for sharing your way of bringing your pup home. Truly appreciate it. And thanks again Snowshoe for posting that link.
