You need food with more fiber, which will firm up his poo's and help him express his anal glands. You can also try raw marrow bones, these will generally make the poo rock hard (as long as you don't let him eat too much marrow) which will also help him express him glands.

I have also used canned pumpkin (plain not pumpkin pie filling), about a tablespoonful, or Benefiber sprinkled on meals to add fiber. I routinely add green beans to meals that adds a little fiber.

Adding fibre can be tricky as it can have the exact opposite effect you want. Try a tsp or TBSP of the pumpkin. Since discovering sweet potato has about 6 times the amount of fibre per unit volume I now prefer it, because I can eat the rest myself as a vegetable with my meal. The can of pumpkin will go bad before you use it all. Well mine did. And you need the whole can of pumpkin to make a pie so that probably won't work. You can dehydrate the raw sweet potato and give chips for the fibre.

Snowshoe, forgot about sweet potatoes. I love them and so do Mardi and Archie.

Yes, it's hard to go through an entire can of pumpkin before it goes bad. I have put it in an ice cube tray and frozen cubes of pumpkin. Does not take long to defrost especially if you are putting warm water in with the kibble.

Could you do the pumpkin ice cubes frozen, kind of like a pumpkin popsicle?

Our vet said she could show me how to express the anal gland. I said (very quickly I might add) NO THANK YOU! I'll gladly pay for her to do it!

We expressed Whispers. But the poor dog had so many recurring infections the anal glands were eventually removed. She recovered with no ill effects and didn't seem to miss them.
