my puppy has both a UTI and Coccidae...

When Pearl (10 weeks old tomorrow) was diagnosed with coccidae and a UTI last week (after the rectal prolapse which seemingly is ok now) the vet put her on Albon. well last night she had frequent urination and it made her whimper a couple times before peeing so today I talked to the vet and she said stop the Albon, give three days of Clavamox, then stop that and go back on Albon for the rest of the dose (6 days) and after that we'll do another urine test to see if she needs more Clavamox.
So-all you UTI and med knowledgeable people, what do you think? she does not really appear ill at this point except last night when she had pee issues. ..

So the Albon is to treat the coccidia, and will do nothing for the bladder infection, and three days of clavamox will do nothing for the UTI, except make it resistant to antibiotics with such a short course of treatment. Stopping the Albon will allow the coccidia to come back.

Can you seek a second opinion?

So sorry your poor baby has had such a rough start since you brought her home, it must be pretty stressful and a very worrying time. Hope you get things sorted for her and am sending lots of positive thoughts and healing vibes Pearl's way for a full and speedy recovery from all her conditions

Shelley, that's kind of what we thought....I can get that second opinion tomorrow when the other vet is open. Maybe he will suggest putting her back on Albon and continuing the Clavamox too instead of stopping it after 3 days.... sometimes I wish I had a direct 24/7 hr hotline to either vet so I can ask those questions I don't seem to come up with until after they are closed!!!

Pearl sure is perky today though! got the zoomies this morn for quite a while- too funny. I am keeping her away from other pups (coccidia) but wish I could take her to the petco puppy class this afternoon (although it would be 1 hr drive...) guess we can wait it out and hope in a week or two we can join a puppy class.

Glad to hear Pearl is feeling perky. Why don't you work with her until she's able to go in a week or two? Will be a period of time our pup will be restricted, so have plans to start with the basics.

Shelley nailed it w/ her comment, but I want to add that I'd personally be afraid of taking a 10 wk old pup to Petco/Petsmart etc type classes because of their rescue adoptions going on there, and all the JQ Public walking in and out w/ unvaccinated or sick pups that may potty or get in your pup's face. I remember reading that even single dose antibiotic treatment may knock out a UTI in children. I didn't find that article, but I did find this one:
Short courses of antibiotics (2-4 days) are as effective as longer treatment for bladder infections in children. | Cochrane Summaries.
Three days would be in the middle of the range of 2 to 4 days.
I have never done this, but the z-pack for kids or us is of short duration. Granted, that is not Augmentin/Clavamox. Given that the more diarrhea she has, the more her chance of getting bacteria on her vulva, this may be worth a shot to control and cure both problems without overwhelming her.

I agree, don't, do NOT, take her to class, especially at a pet store, before she is better, vaccinated and some time has passed. It could be a life or death decision at her age.
