    Sass is limping

It started about a week ago - she was wrestling with her sister, yelped and came up limping on her left front leg. Got better pretty quickly, but since then it’s flared up a couple times. We’ve been partially resting her - no running after bumpers in the yard, no wrestling, but haven’t really confined her to her crate much - when we have, it seems like it was making her stiff so she would be even more lame immediately after coming out, which is why I have been a bit reluctant to do it. I’m not sure exactly where it hurts as she doesn’t really react much to any manipulation, but I suspect it’s in her upper arm/shoulder.

Having been through a dog (Scully) with bad elbows I’m a tad paranoid that it is more than just a rough play injury, but I have to keep reminding myself that not only have her parents and grandparents and some great-grandparents all have clear elbows (some older generations weren’t checked - it’s not that they had bad elbows), but when Scully started having trouble we couldn’t pinpoint a particular moment where she started hurting, which is very different than what’s going on with Sass.

She was much better this morning, but went out in the yard to do her business and came back in sore again. Didn’t see what happened, but I’m guessing she tweaked it somehow. Going to try a couple days of true crate rest (only out on a leash) before taking her in, as I’m pretty sure that’s what they’d tell us to do anyway.

Of course this happens when my DH is out of town and I am on my own with the dogs and kids. Tried taking her out on a leash earlier, and it was a nightmare .... turns out I’m going to have to crate her sister in the other crate before I can take her out or she’ll just try to run and play on the leash anyway - silly puppy! Going to be a long few days ....

Oh, when Kimber was about Sassy's age she went through what was called "puppy pano." As far as I could tell, she would run and play, start limping, we'd have to go on rest for a week, then she'd do it again a few days after she was released from rest. Since she was in her highest energy stage, it was a bit of a nightmare. It did eventually stop happening. I hope Sassy heals quickly and forever-ly!

Good luck. We went through a bout of crate rest in December. Baby dog bruised a growth plate and he was on crate rest for 3 weeks. I can just say thank goodness it was just bruised.

Oh and another painful point about rest .... no stairs, always fun when you live in a multi-level house. I did a lot of carrying up and down stairs.

My initial thought was pano, but it sounds like it happened due to an incident. If they have pano, can it be made worse?

Poor Sassy!!! I hope with some crate rest and keeping her on lead will allow her to heal up.

I went through that with Oban, to the point of an appt. at Guelph to be scoped when the little devil, after three months, just stopped limping. One thing I always wonder if I did right; I rested for two weeks. Slowly introduced exercise again, still a limp, to the Vet, who said rest for two weeks and take an anti-inflamatory. So would we have been two weeks further ahead if I'd just gone in the first place? Hope Sassy resolves a heck of a lot quicker.

Poor Sassy, I hope she heals up with no further problems. Many of us have carried our silly pups up and down stairs until our own backs have nearly given up the ghost. I can't imagine how you'll manage with her sister pestering you both. Hope the rest pays off!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

oh ouch! was going to suggest Pano too but you've seen and heard an actual incident. That's got to be fun with the 2 of them, no way Sassy can rest with her sister out and about bugging her! double trouble is now going to be double work for you for a few weeks, yikes! here's hoping it resolves with rest, and quickly!
