    Sick puppy :(

Not a question, more just a vent and feeling sorry for myself, and especially for Rowan.

Hubby left for work at about 6:20 this morning. He fed the dogs before he left, and left them in their crates since I was still sleeping. I was woken about 7:15 by a worked up Rowan. Went downstairs and let them out... normal pee and poop, and then about 7:30 she threw up. It was mainly partially-chewed kibble chunks, nothing untoward, and she re-ate some of it while I was cleaning it up. I figured that probably meant she wasn't too nauseated, and she had been worked up, so I decided to just keep an eye on her.

By 9:30 she had vomited 8 more times, and was getting more and more listless. I threw on clothes and called the breeder (she is co-owned) to let her know what was going on, and that we were headed to the vet. Called hubby and let him know as well, and were there shortly after the vet opened at 10 (I called en-route to let them know we were on our way).

Parvo test negative, and nothing on physical exam except generalized abdominal pain. She vomited four more times in the exam room (not that there was much coming up by that point). Opted for conservative management for now. She's had cerenia and sub-q fluids, and is to have nothing by mouth for 4 hours. Then we'll re-introduce water, and if all goes well small amounts of boiled chicken and rice after 6 hours... rush back if needed, naturally. Luckily the vet we saw has known me for ~20 years (multi-doc practice, don't know them all) and was comfortable with the idea of me monitoring her at home. For now we're home and she's resting.

I feel so bad for my baby, can tell she feels yucky! Thank goodness the vet is open Sundays, and also pretty glad she's insured... this was just over our deductible for the year (trying to find a silver lining...).

Poor baby Rowan! I hope whatever it is clears up quickly, I hate this sort of thing when they're so young.

Lark had a similar episode when she was about that age, not so much vomiting, it moved quickly to diarrhea. When I called the vet to say I wanted to bring her in the phone consult person started asking me how long I'd withheld food, have I tried this or that. No, she's 14 weeks old and I want to bring her in as soon as possible, today. I'm with you on getting things under control ASAP.

Yeah, I didn't even give them that chance. Called from the car. The receptionist picked up the phone and asked the standard "is this an emergency or can you hold" and I basically said "I'm on my way in with a 10.5 week old puppy, she's vomited 9 times since 7:30 (it was about 10) and isn't herself. Yes, I'm an existing customer (here's my account number) and this is which dog it is." She's too young to take chances IMO! (breeder almost lost her Grand Champion stud dog to parvo when he was a pup... even though we were pretty sure that wasn't what was going on with Rowan, it taught us how quickly things can go south)

Thanks for the good wishes! So far she's still sleeping.

Sometimes they can vomit like that when they have Coccidia, have you seen a recent stool? Is it mucousy and stinky? I am glad the snap test for Parvo was negative, so thats good news. It could also be that Rowan just ate something he shouldn't have. Young puppies can dehydrate quickly when the vomit a lot, so you did the absolute right thing taking him in.

I would treat prophylactically for Coccidia, just to cover your bases, since Coccidia and Giardia often don't show up in stool samples. There is a new class of medicines for Coccidia, Baycox, also called Toltrazuril that kills it (in one or two doses) rather than just controls it.

Best wishes for Rowan, hope he feels better fast.

She just had a normal poop (Shelley her poop this morning and just now were completely normal... no mucous or unusual odour, formed and not loose or too dry). I had her on a leash outside to make sure she didn't grab/try to swallow anything random. Wants water... ran straight to where the bowl usually is when we came inside but she isn't allowed for another half hour. With the sub-q fluid I'm not worried about her dehydrating since she hasn't vomited again or had diarrhea. Now she's back lying in her corner feeling sorry for herself.

Rowan and I both thank everyone so much for the mojo!

Poor baby! That much puking would be frightening in such a young pup. Sending more mojo!

Yeah, it was pretty scary! She had a drink about half and hour ago, and so far so good. Hubby just got home with the chicken for her. Every now and then she perks up and tries to play (I redirect her), but it only lasts about 15 minutes tops and then she's back in her corner in a ball. Been sitting kind of hunched up, too, so I'm sure her belly is still a bit sore.
