    15 week to thin?

I am a wondering if my Ashe looks just a bit thin? He has a his first, with me as owner, appointment the 22nd so I'll know his official weight then. But he just seems a tad "skinny" from just behind the ribs. You can see the ribs but when you pet him you can feel them. We feed him the exact food the breeder fed, his parents are just fine. He doesn't eat as I am familiar with labs eating, he mostly picks at his food. I've had him exactly 2 weeks yesterday and he has eaten that way all this time. Shots are all current, he get's plenty of walks (already gone .69 of a mile in one walk today). We feed Iams Puppy Large Breed (he will almost inhale our other dogs food though, can't remember offhand what that is).

Couple pics if interested to see.

It's hard to tell from these pics. You didn't say how much your feeding him, but at this age they are growing rather quickly, so you're going to need to up the amount of food your feeding every couple weeks. Is he still on the same food as his breeder had him on?

Yes, I asked the breeder before I even got him what he fed the pups. I give 2 cups in the morning which he will pick at for a few hours until it is gone and then at night I give another 2cups. Seeing as how he grazes the food, which I've been told quite often is bad, I don't add that 3rd feeding during the day.

My Jules never ate like a typical lab either. I personally don't think having a fat puppy is good. I like lean. Being able to feel ribs is fine but you shouldn't be able to see them.

So if he has his first vet appointment with you tomorrow, but you've had him 2 weeks? Typically breeders insist that you take the pups in within 2-3 days of getting them home for the first exam, to make sure your vet gives them a once over. If the dog is from hunting lines or pet lines, he may just always be a thinner lab, not the big bulky style of the show labs.

Barry581: We feed him the same food he was eating at the breeders, Iams Large Breed Puppy.

JenC: The breeder said his next shots weren't due until the 22nd and the vet (when I took our other dog in the wednesday after I got him) said that isn't long off so it's okay to wait until then. So I just thought I'd see what people here think lol. I'll know in the morning what his weight is so go from there.

Ok. Are you wetting his food before you feed him? Did his breeder mention that he was a picky eater? Are his poo's solid?

Have you tried putting the food down, give him about 20 minutes then pick the food up? Sometimes when they know they can just graze, they aren't all that motivated to eat quickly.

He didn't mention anything like that, what I think is they had a full bowl at all times and he brought that habit home of drive by eating. Wetting dry food? I've never really heard of doing that. Say 1/2 cup water for 2 cups kibble? Wetting kibble, that is a very interesting idea. Wonder if our senior dog would eat a bit easier (her teeth not the greatest ). I am absolutely going to no allow the grazing anymore so I'll do the 20 minutes also.

    Thanks for the advice

I just add enough water to float the food.
