Maybe it's a flare up of the Eimeria? I applaud you for home cooking his meals...but you need to be very careful with adding extra calcium for a growing puppy. Extra calcium can cause their bones to grow too fast...causing problems later in life.

I actually shouldn’t have said the cottage cheese and Greek yogurt adds calcium. I should have said extra protein. But, I appreciate the caution!

I hope so. I'm trying Annamaet Encore Chicken and Brown Rice All Life Stages. It's recommended on their website for large breed puppies. Lido's only eating 1/3 cup of it right now in each of his two 2 1/3 - 2 1/2 c. feedings per day. Annamaet Petfoods It's not available where I live, so I ordered it on Chewy. It was hard finding a kibble with no corn, wheat, soy, or legumes! Pro Plan, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin all contain corn, wheat, and/or soy. Many of the other grain inclusive kibbles I checked out have peas in them, some of them the third or fourth ingredient! Fingers crossed that this one works. I'm over the dog food situation...

I've heard really good things about Annamaet! Our local pet supplies store carries it. Glad you found something for Lido! Does he eat 2 1/2 cups twice a day? That sounds about right.

Thank you! I hope it works, as well! I wish there was a local store near me that carries it. I'd have to drive an hour or so into downtown Atlanta to get it - ugh. That's why I ordered it off Chewy. Lido eats 2 1/2 cups twice daily, but sometimes, when a growth spurt slows down, I cut him back to 2 1/3 cups twice daily. It also depends on his activity level (hanging around the house vs. day care or boarding at my friend's farm, where he gets lots of exercise). I check his ribs frequently, and go by how they feel and how he looks. I will definitely be keeping my eye on him as he transitions more to Annamaet, as it is higher in calories (414 kcal/cup) than the food he's transitioning from.

I've had two labs in the past. The first, Bluto, an English lab, was 4 years old when we adopted him from my niece, and he was very obese. It was a constant struggle getting and keeping his weight to a healthy level. We got him down from 101 pounds to between 80-85, and he lived to be 11 years old. The second lab, Chipper, an American field lab, was adopted at around 4-5 months from our local animal control (a less than scrupulous breeder had a large litter and wasn't able to sell them all, so Chipper was turned in ). We were very careful with his weight from the beginning, and he weighed around 70-75 pounds at adulthood. Chipper lived to be 14.5 years old. We want to make sure that Lido maintains a healthy weight throughout his life, to give him the best chance of living a nice, long life, too!

I completely agree...Labs just love to eat and it's up to us to monitor their food so they can lead healthier lives. I saw a beautiful black Lab yesterday at our outside mall...he was only 16 months old but so obese. It actually made him look older. I felt bad for him...but what could I say to his owner? It's very hard to say...your dog is beautiful, but very overweight..
