    Sensitivity to chicken?

I gave Diggity plain, cooked chicken on Wednesday during his training session. I wanted to give him “high value” rewards. That day, I know I gave him too much food overall because I didn’t cut back on his regular meals PLUS he got quite a bit of chicken. That night, he had pretty runny poops. And then runny poops on Friday and Saturday. Finally, this morning his poops are back to almost normal.

A few weeks ago, I fed him plain chicken as a high value reward for his training session. I didn’t give him nearly as much as this past Wednesday, but he still got probably a cup throughout the day. He had major diarrhea, BUT this was also when he tested positive for that rabbit parasite (eimeria) so I chalked it up to that.

What do you think the chances are that he has a sensitivity to chicken? Or, did I put his puppy tummy into a tailspin because of too much and too rich food that one day? Having never had a dog with a food allergy or sensitivity, I am not sure what to look for or how to know for sure. I am hesitant to try it again to find out, but it would be nice to not have to avoid chicken the rest of his life.

Well I would try a small amount and work my way up to see if its the chicken and maybe it was too much of a change on his tummy. maybe start with a 1/4 th of a cup if that makes his tummy run Id probably stop giving it to him. Im all about trial and error. What protein source is in his meals?

Turkey. I am home cooking his meals and I use Dr. Harvey’s base mix (Raw Vibrance) and add ground turkey. As a puppy he also gets cottage cheese and Greek yogurt mixed in to increase his protein and calcium levels. I’ll cut back on that when he’s fully grown. When I first switched to Dr. Harvey’s, I used ground beef. He did fine with it, but I felt it was too high in fat and greasy. I think the turkey is better and he likes it just as much. So far, he is doing extremely well on it. My only complaint (if I had any) is that he poops three times a day, which seems like a lot. He’s very consistent though (early morning, noon, and early evening.)

Maybe cook some Turkey breast for him as his treats.

I agree with Jollymolly. Cook turkey breast for treats and see if that helps. Yes, dogs can be sensitive to chicken - very common. I empathize with you dealing with runny poops. Lido gets runny poops anytime I change anything in his diet, even just a little bit. I'm having to change his kibble now, because the one he's on isn't made anymore, and I'm doing it VERY slowly. He's still having some episodes of runny poop, especially the second one of the day, despite feeding a similar kibble and giving him probiotics.

Chicken is a common sensitivity for dogs. I don't even like to think about chicken around my two just in case they're reading my mind. Not even a little piece once in a while. Nuh Uh.

Poop frequency sometimes decreases with age but three times a day isn't a lot. Dan goes at least three times a day and so does Sunnie. They get three smallish meals during the day so a fairly constant input...it's gotta go somewhere. I've had dogs go just twice...with two meals a day...but what I'm remember is as adults. Seems to me we had more when they were puppies....puppies just seem to go all the time, some of them. Don't sweat that.

What is their reaction to chicken? Same as Diggity’s diarrhea?

Good to know three times a day isn’t a lot. I had read somewhere that it was, but since he is very regular (usually), I’ll take that off my list of things to worry about! :-)

Did you find kibble you think will work for him long term?

Yep. Diarrhea and foul gas. Or is that fowl gas?
