    Puppy eating too fast

My 11 month old Lab Marley has been having problems with eating really quick and not chewing his food. I got him a slow eater awhile back and it slowed him down at 1st until as time passed he quickly learned how to pick up his kibble with his tongue really quick. Stressing out as what to do because I don't want him getting sick and it causing possibly some issues down the line. Any suggestions or advice would be great.

Dogs don't chew their food. Maybe a crunch or two to break up big pieces but mostly they gulp and swallow kibble. Assuming it's kibble and not whole, raw turkey necks. However slower eating isn't going to hurt anything so why not try a different slow feeder? A video of him eating to show your Vet might help to reassure you, or confirm.

Have you tried a feeder mat. Or this might work better is this ball there is no way he can make it come out faster. I used this When Molly was a puppy.

I've used that tricky treat ball and the Kong Wobbler to dispense kibbles more slowly. I like them but you have to not mind having the kibble spilled out on the floor and the dog licking it up. Mine don't leave any kibble behind unless it goes under furniture. I like that it gives them some mental and physical exercise working on getting it out. They learn to get it out fairly quickly but not as fast as hoovering it up out of a bowl. You can also spread the kibble out on a rimmed baking sheet or put something like a large ball into their food bowl that they have to maneuver around.

We use the Kong Wobbler, and split the cup of food into two or three Wobblings. It takes her about 8 minute per Wobble. When I put the cup in her dish, she gulps it down in (timed) 32 seconds.

I bought a dish from Chewy that is similar to the saucers I use w/ my litters. It slows her down by a couple minutes. https://www.chewy.com/mr-peanuts-slo...teel/dp/180954

Thanks to everyone who replied back, I will certainly look into these things for him. I have never owned a lab before so I was worried inhaling food could cause issues for his stomach as I know they sometimes have digestion problems. I've been trying to put weight on him lately and was worried by eating too fast he wasn't getting the nutrients from his food.

Welcome to the world of labs! All mine have eaten super fast. None seem to have suffered for their efforts and have slowed down a little bit as they got older. I mainly got the Wobbler and the treat ball to slow them down so that they weren't staring at me 17 seconds after starting to eat, wondering what our next fun activity would be. Dogs don't have molars to crunch the food, so they're not going to be grinding and tasting kibbles the way a human would. How much are you feeding him now?

My puppy, Lido, is also a lightning speed eater! Which slow feeder have you tried? I rotate Lido through different ones, changing them out daily, so that he doesn't get too used to the same one repeatedly. Here are the links to the ones I use. The link shows all three of them - be sure to get size large. FYI: They're cheaper on Amazon.
