Each household does what it needs to do for the safety of the puppy. If you don't have other dogs and you won't be using the crate permanently, I see no need to use it unless it is to train that the crate is their happy place.

We are a multi-dog household so we use the crate for the first few weeks to feed the puppy until the integration into the pack is more secure. When I'm sure that they have all bonded together, I then begin feeding one meal each day in the pack and gradually increase it to the point where the meals are no longer in the crate. We feed twice each day so puppies lunch is still in the crate just to be sure that the older dogs don't engage in thievery.

I wasnt going to feed in the crate. But we have two cats who eat canned food in the morning and it never dawned on me that this will be a great benefit to keep Quincy out of their food! So it is actually working out well. Its also nice because we can be eating while he is and everybody is happy!
