Unfortunately, we got our lab from a new breeder. I would prefer to take the advice from folks here as they probably got their labs from more experienced breeders

Even as a new breeder, they should be educated and know the lines. They would have a mentor and be able to talk to the breeders of the sire and dam, etc. If it's a good breeder, they did not go in blindly.

FWIW, ProPlan Sport 30/20 is what several local breeders feed and what I was recommended. But, there are different lines and they do better on different foods. It's not really a one size fits all situation. My boys are big dogs with lots of bone.

For what it’s worth, we’re feeding the regular Pro-Plan Focus Puppy Chicken and Rice, not the large breed, although I know of breeders who do use the large-breed version. Just stay away from any of the formulas with shreds and you should be ok.

That's the formula I raised Sam on.

    Hello all,

Well, I started to make the switch to ProPlan Puppy Focus Chicken and Rice. I started over the weekend by mixing in about 1/3 ProPlan and 2/3 Hill's Prescription I/D (The food Kona was on). I started this mix on Sunday and the first couple days were fine. Then on Tuesday night, I noticed her stool a little soft. Wednesday they were still a little soft so I stopped mixing in the new ProPlan food. She's been on just Hill's for the last two meals (dinner last night and breakfast today). He stool was normal again this morning after breakfast.

What seems odd is that Kona has had several different kinds of treats since we've had her. She's never seemed to have a problem with any of these so it's not like she is super sensitive to foods other than the Hill's prescription I/D.

She had the soft stool issue with Flint River Ranch Lamb, Rice, and Millet & ProPlan Puppy Focus Chicken and Rice. I didn't notice any of the main ingredients being in both Flint River Ranch and ProPlan (that wasn't also in Hill's). So I'm really at a loss.

Could it just be the fact Kona is having a NEW food and not actually what that new food is? Should I try mixing in the new food again, starting with a very small amount and only build more up the new food over and longer period? I was planning on making the full switch after about a week and a half or so. How long should it take to switch over to a new food?

Thanks again for all the help!

I'm in the middle of a puppy food switch (which I've never done before) so I'm sure more experienced people will chime in, but here is what I've heard. It is not abnormal to see soft stools when switching to a new food, even if the new food is better in the end. I've been switching 10% each day. My dog already had runny stools (reason for the food change), so I can't say totally what's normal, but it's actually been good so far.

Sometimes overfeeding can cause soft stools. Theo was very sensitive to that as a younger puppy. Even a 1/4c more than he needed would go right through him.

+1 on what Laura said. I used Wellness CORE Grain Free Puppy formula. No problems whatsoever, but my breeder raised him on that same puppy food.
