I would try mixing again. Just keep her on the amount of mixed food right before where the soft stools started for a few days longer than you did before.

Anytime a puppy tries something new, treats, human food, they can go a little soft.

Maxx would get soft stools during teething also. Nothing in his diet was different.

Maybe try adding a probiotic during the switch? I’ve used Bene-bac plus on my young puppies before ...

    Thanks all!!!!

I started again. This time making sure not to increase the total amount of food (that might have been the problem as the total amount of food was slightly more when I was making the switch over before). I'll also make sure I mix smaller amounts of the new food for longer before increasing the amount of new food and decreasing the previous food.

    Fingers crossed.....

    Hey guys,

I'm back with the same issue

I tried making the switch and ran into the same problem. I made sure to start off with only a very small amount of the new food and made sure not to increase the total amount of food at all this time. After a few days, Kona started getting soft stools again. I continued with the mix of new and old food and the stools kept getting softer until they were diarrhea. I switched back to just the old food, and within a few days the stool were back to normal.

I waited a few days and tried again. Same thing.

I'm confused how she can be that sensitive to a small addition of some new food (ProPlan puppy focus chicken and rice) when she's never had any problem with the plenty of treats we have given her.

I'd hate to keep her on the prescription Hill's I/D as it's almost $100 a month and from what people have said here, it's not even that great of a quality.

*** Do I try a third new food. So far I tried Flint River ranch Lamb, Millet and Rice and ProPlan Focus Puppy Chicken and Rice.

*** Do I just stick with the Hill's prescription I/D and just give up on trying to switch her?

    Any suggestions?

Thanks again for the help so far!

I wouldn't go back to the Hills. I would try continuing the Pro Plan and add a probiotic, if you haven't already. You could also add a spoonful of plain pumpkin. Give the puppy ample time to get used to the food. There could be many reasons this is happening that have nothing to do with the food and starting on the food roller coaster is never a good idea. I think I mentioned earlier that Maxx had loose stools during teething, nothing had changed at all in his diet. Once he was done teething I never had another problem.

What would be a good probiotic for a 5 month old female?

Personally, I wouldn't switch again for a while. But, if you're looking to switch now or a suggestion for the future, I highly recommend Wellness Puppy Core (Grain Free). Murphy was on Iams Puppy Smart when he came home and it was meh. He would poo a ton a day (more than a new puppy should) and the food smelled awful. To me, the food wasn't a great choice for him so we made the switch over to Wellness. Ever since being on Wellness, his coat is more shiny, he smells better, he acts better, and he doesn't poo as much as he did (I know part of that is maturity, but the food plays a role in it too). It is a bit pricey, but we order the 26lb bags from Amazon that run about $49-51. That usually lasts for a little over a month.

I recommend FortiFlora. The vet gave us a box when Murphy experienced his last bout of diarrhea. I mix a packet with a tablespoon of yogurt and give it to him. It helps a lot!

I’ve been using Bene-Bac Plus on my not quite 3 month old pups for a while now ... they occasionally have issues from things they get into in the yard and a day or two of the Bene Bac seems to clear it right up.
