Not saying you are overfeeding necessarily but if you're feeding his normal amount and then adding lots of treats on top of that, it could definitely be causing diarrhea especially if the treats are bigger and higher in calories.

When our dogs were puppies, I used their kibble as a treat and just subtracted it from their daily portions. I saved the better stuff when I needed something high value and even then I would adjust the dinner portion accordingly if it was an intense training day that required lots of treats.

Also, I can't remember how old your puppy is but I remember grain free wasn't appropriate for puppies because of the calcium/phosphorus levels. Not sure if this has changed but that was the general consensus a few years ago when mine were puppies.
It just happens on and off which is weird. It could've been a treat overload, I will definitely agree with that. It just seems like he has some sort of "wheat intolerance" though. Like about 3hrs after he had the treat with the wheat in it, he was in the yard suffering from a mild case of the Murphy Squirts (yes, we've dubbed it that now LOL). Ever since then, he's been completely fine. We also aren't overfeeding him - he's having his normal amount and you can feel his ribs with a slight amount of pressure through his puppy skin/fat.

We decided to go with the Wellness Core (grain free) after our old lab suffered from tons of allergies (corn, chicken, dairy, basically anything). I also read somewhere online that wheat/grain isn't good for dogs, but not positive about puppies. He was on Iams Puppy Smart when he came home and it seemed like it was making him sick (loose poops, he had a weird "smell", flaking skin, etc.) so we switched him over to Wellness and he's been fine ever since. He smells like a normal dog, his poops are normal (except for the few isolated incidents), his skin is better, his coat is softer (part of this is because he's growing, but still), etc.

He has an appt for Saturday morning, so this will definitely be a topic of discussion with the vet. Maybe they'd have more insight on why he's having diarrhea following a treat with wheat in it.

When Maxx was a puppy he had the runs off and on through teething and a bit beyond. I really don't think it is abnormal and it always resolved with a spoonful or 2 of pumpkin. Puppies are constantly putting strange things in their mouths, it is a wonder they don't have perpetual runs! As long as it does not happen multiple times daily, puppy is properly vetted and there are no other symptoms I would not be overly concerned.

It seems to be slowing down a bit since all of his baby teeth have fallen out and now the adult teeth are just pushing their way through.

We mentioned the painful poop to the vet this morning and he said if it isn't happening all the time, don't be too concerned. He also mentioned that it could've been dry/he may not have had enough water.
