Food for 8 week old puppy.

Hello, We picked up our puppy on Ssturday. He turned 8 weeks that same day. I have been feeding him 3/4 cup of food 3x a day. He eats in the typical puppy fashion , fast and searching for more when done. My concern is , he is actively searching for food 2 hours prior to his next feed time. I fed him today at 12:00 pm and by 3:30 he was whining near the gate on the room where the food is. He was sitting in the area where I place his bowl of food, and staring me down. He wouldn't move ! haha . Is 1 cup 3x a day too much ? I wonder if I should increase the amount?

Mine moved to 1 cup 3x a day at about 9 or 10 weeks, I think, but if I can remember way back to when we first got Mulder, I think he came home on 1 cup 3x a day. The problem with Labs of any age is that they are ALWAYS hungry and searching for food, even if they are being fed an appropriate amounts. You could try upping his food a bit to see if that helps, but he may never appear satiated, LOL.

He is just so funny. He was giving me the stare down! I may try 1 cup if he continues the whine in the afternoon. I have been limiting the amount of water to just at meal times ( well, I did give a mid afternoon drink) to try to get a better handle on the potty training. Currently going out every 30 min or so, and producing liquid. When kept the left over water down from meals , we had a lot more accidents. It's been a long time since I have done puppy training !! OOOOY!

If you are withholding water, he is probably looking for water, not food. Puppies should have water available as long as you are around to take them out. They drink a lot. They need it. They are active and they get thirsty. Obviously, pick it up an hour or so before bed or being left alone. Puppies have accidents. You might need to take him out every 10 minutes right now, but know that before you know it, he'll be potty trained.

I would feed him at least 1 cup, three times a day. I also would also not limit his water...it should always be available for him.

Good Luck with your new puppy!

I agree with this ... our puppies always have free access to water. If he isn’t used to having free access, he may seem like he’s overindulging at first but once he realizes it will always be there, he should settle down.

Take the water up at night, but give free access during the day.

Thanks for the help. We have put the water back out , and have started using a few pieces of food as training tools as well. If this doesn't seem to satiate him, I will move to 1 cup a day. He is so DAMN cute.. I have to get my photos transferred to the computer so that I can post here!!

You need to slowly increase the amount of food per meal as he has his growth spurts. Prefer to see a chunky pup than a lanky/thin pup. If they are not kept up on proper weight you will lose bone. Once you lose it - you can never get it back. Talk to your breeder about proper amount to feed. send them pics so they can see the growth spurts and advise you. (that is assuming they care and keep in touch - which I hope they do)

PS: don't just jump from 3/4 a cup per meal 3x/day to 1 cup 3x/day or you will have loose stools.. Start by adding a bit to each meal and work up to 3 cups total per day. I would give it about 2 weeks to get to the 3 cups per day. Just keep an eye on the stools so they don't get loose. If they do than cut back a bit on amount and go more slowly with increase.
