How much fruit and veg do you give your puppy?

Stella is now a beautiful 18wks old, just hitting the 30lb mark. She gets two cups a day of ProPlan, which is doled out in two meals plus used for training and stuffing kongs with a bit of frozen fruit, green beans, and peanut butter or cream cheese.

She is teething like crazy and a friend recommended freezing whose carrots, sweet potatoes, and cored apples. She has devoured each of these with typical lab gusto. My question is, do you limit the amount of fruit or fresh veggies that you give per day? We don't feed table scraps, but often if my daughter doesn't finish an apple or banana I'll share those remnants with the puppy.

    Thanks.

I just give small quantities of fruit and vegetables. As adults they get about 1/2 can of green beans but they don't need as much kibble as when they were younger. I would just mention that at 18 weeks and 30+ pounds, my girl was eating 3 cups of food divided into 3 meals a day. My male was probably getting a little more. To me 2 cups seems light for a growing lab.

It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. Thanks. The kibble amount is lower since she's getting about 2tb of peanut butter a day in stuffed kongs so that adds in extra calories. So far, the vet has been good with her growth rate. Will check in at ou next appt in two weeks.

Nothing wrong with healthy table scraps. We often give out the leftovers, as long as they are not greasy or overly seasoned.

I don't give my pups (who are 9 months) any fruit or veggies for the most part.

When they were teething, we had antlers, nylabones and white knucklebones around for them to chew on. Sometimes USA made compressed rawhide or thick chips. Sometimes raw marrow bones.

As long as they are not fat, or thin or having poop issues... I don't keep track. They love bananas!

Labradorks, your comment about bananas has me laughing. Archie will take a piece, walk out to the living room, of course on the rug, and spit it out. Stinker.

Our dogs are older and I use veggies and fruit for weight control and fill tummies. I use frozen green beans (if you opt for canned be sure it is salt free) and frozen fruit, about a fist full each twice a day.

Hemi and i share a banana every morning. We have done this since he was a few months old. The saddest I ever see him is on the rare mornings I have forgotten to go to the grocery and do not have any. Its a ritual I make his breakfast and eat mine then we split a banana. When I tell him sorry, there are no bananas, he is first like, your joking right. I know your just kidding me. Then it sets in there will be no banana this morning. He gets so sad.

We also share an apple every night. This is another common routine. Good healthy snacks for both of us.

Then he gets a few blueberries and strawberries whenever I am having some. Carrots and other veggies when I am cooking or snacking. I actually find I eat healthier, because I want him to eat healthy, and I like sharing snacks with him I make my snacks healthy.

I don't think you'd have to freeze a sweet potato for a teething pup. They are as hard as a piece of lumber. Unless the freezing changes the taste, makes it more sweet. Raw they are, how to describe; chalky? Not very sweet in raw form. Actually, freezing does change the taste to more sweet but not much. I forgot I chopped some up and froze for training treats. Thawed out they are much softer than raw, but my pieces are little.

That's funny. Major and I share an apple everyday at lunch (occasionally it's a banana). Everytime I grab the apple he knows he gets a slice, but he does the same thing as Archie. He runs to the living room and spits it out. Only problem is he runs right back and looks at me like "Where's my second slice?" When I say no and point at the piece he rejected, he turns and just hops off merrily to go eat his piece. Goofy guy.

I throw some spinach, apple, maybe carrots, blueberries, and a bit of salmon in with her kibble (reducing the amount of kibble a bit). And when I have a bit of smoked fish in the morning, or smoked oysters (no salt or anything added), she gets a piece. We will give her some fish or something if we cook it for dinner, but don't really do scraps mainly because most of the food we cook is pretty spicy.
