    IRISHWHISTLER VISIT - MAY 2018 Pt 4

Meeting and watching MAC was maybe the highlight of the trip! This little guy never ceased to amaze me, he has a very calm, confident demeanor. I think Mike and I used the word "fearless" on many occasion to describe him. I was able to shoot these pics of MAC on a live chukar. There is no doubt MAC shows a genetic predispositon to not only go after prey, but to hold it with a true Labrador soft mouth, and bring it back to hand. This little guy is going to be something special!

I was disappointed that this pic is slightly out of focus, and it was the only one on the sequence I shot that was out of focus. It shows the drive and absolute tenacity MAC displays in his work.

And just to show you where MAC gets it from. TRAD doing what he does best!

These dogs were bred to hunt and they live to work on birds. There is a well known saying amongst those of us that train gun dogs, "NO BIRDS - NO BIRD DOG". We minimize the use of live birds where we can, but there simply is no substitute for the training value gained for the working of gun dog prospects on live birds. We often use the same bird over and over again and save the birds to be frozen for further use as training birds one e they have died. The use of these pen raised birds now will result in a very high standard of recovery skills applied on wild birds later under actual field conditions, and in that you will find the retriever as being a real aid in wildlife conservation. Note that protectionism and conservation are two separate concepts, the latter being the wise use of a natural resource. The use of well trained retrievers is an important element in the wildlife conservation efforts made on both waterfowl and upland bird species.

And being a really good looking dog adds to the WOW factor. (my comment on the bird wasn't a serious negative for what was going on)

    Sundance,
No worries. Just an opportunity to explain the process for some that may not understand.

Just went through all the pictures and WOW, WOW, WOW! A three gorgeous dogs doing what labs are born and bred to do. Excellent pictures. I know the use of live bird is taken very responsibly.

Thank you both for sharing the pictures and wisdom.
