Aye Mates,
So I have taken on the training o' a wee black Labrador lass pup that has been named SADIE. This beautiful and significantly smaller sibling o' me pup MAC though smaller in overall stature makes up for that with her BIG heart and bold spirit in her approach to all she does. The pups whelped back in February out o' the HR UH TTF CRAIGHORN KIFFIN TRAD SH X LAKE CHAFFEE'S AUTUMN STARRY NIGHT have all turned out to be highly social pups that learn quickly. Those pups that have owners preparing them for work as hunters and / or hunt test dogs have all reported that the pups are taking well to field training efforts.
So I trained with SADIE and her owner Dave yesterday. Dave is the President o' me game club and was one o' the fortunate buyers o' a pup from this wonderful breeding. Dave could not have been more pleased with the outcome o' yesterday's training session. SADIE was introduced to live birds yesterday (chukar partridge) and made several chases, and subsequent retrieves on marks thrown for her. All retrieves were started and ended at a place platform set at the line in the field. SADIE was exposed to the sound o' a duck call prior to the throw o' each remotely tossed mark and the shot o' a 209 primer revolver barked out at the top o' the arc for each mark thrown. SADIE had been gradually exposed to gunfire during previous training sessions with no aversion exhibited. During bird training yesterday we had Miss SADIE running toward gunfire rather than away from it, her excitement and drive for live birds was released and no apprehension for gunfire was observed.
SADIE made several retrieves to hand on land and though not in classic style, those elements will all come into alignment with solidification o' obedience training, hold and force fetch conditioning that will take place further down the road in her development. The objective yesterday was the conjuring o' that inner prey drive lurking just below the surface, that being demonstrated by SADIE in a fashion that would make any Mama wolf proud.
The session was later finished off with TRAD, MAC, and SADIE being brought to a pond for the opportunity to cool down and for SADIE to swim if she chose to do so on her own accord whilst playing with the other dogs that both swim like otters. Things started getting a bit rough in overall play between SADIE and MAC so I put TRAD and MAC up in there dog boxes and kept SADIE with meself and Dave down at the pond. Progressive tosses of an Avery EZ Bird teal bumper further and further fro the water's edge saw SADIE among her maiden voyage as a true swimmer during yesterday's session. Before the water work for SADIE had concluded, she had made four short single water retrieves with delivery made to hand upon exit from the pond each time. A day filled with confidence building motivation and success for both SADIE and Dave. The forging o' TEAM SADIE has begun and I am highly optimistic for their success as we move forward.
