    SADIE ~ Introduction To Decoys

    Aye Mates,
I conducted a training session with 16 week old SADIE, a littermate to me pup MAC both having been sired by me companion gun dog TRAD. Miss SADIE is being introduced to many o' the elements that will be integral to her work as a gun dog such as gunfire, birds, water, duck and goose calls and decoys. Yesterday was a first experience for SADIE with decoys and I like to make first introductions in this regard on land as opposed to water. Once comfortable with decoys on land and the pup is swimming strongly, I will then expand introduction to include floating decoys in the aquatic environment.

SADIE was worked on-lead during HEELING drills through a maze o' decoys and was HEELED up to them, o'er them, and put at SIT adjacent and very closely to them, all o' this after letting her explore the large Canada goose field decoys on her own terms. SADIE quickly became comfortable with the decoys learning that they were to be ignored and not feared. NOTE the eye contact betwixt SADIE and Dave during these drills, that being conditioned early on in the pups training and fostered throughout ongoing development. An attentive dog is much more readily trained.

SADIE was worked on remote STAY drills whilst surrounded by decoys and did great during that exercised whilst building her obedience and patience. Additionally, a "runway" or lane was set up using decoys and SADIE was worked on single marked land retrieves o' an Avery EZ Bird training bumper that was purposely tossed to the end o' the lane way. This constructed lane sets the retriever up to successfully run straight out on the send and to take a straight line back to the handler in making the retrieve. Pre-planning and setting the dog up for success should be considered a most important facet o' all K9 training. SADIE had a grand day o' training and it was great for her owner / handler Dave to see firsthand the building o' her self confidence and competence as she completed each carefully designed drill.

    Cheers,
    THE DOG WHISTLER 🍀🇮🇪🇺🇸
