    Max our 1st Lab

Here is Max. He is our 1st lab. Max was 6 mos to the day when he came into our lives, last week. Having had numerous Goldens over the years with a brief period of tracking, obedience and breeding, Max is the first venture into Labs. A few Siberian Huskies thrown in the mix as we have a 10 yo one now. Max is fairly well behaved. Max has a bounce house to house story, before he found his home here. My friend who breeds labs had bought Max to stud. Then his testicles didn't drop. He sold Max at 16 wks to a family who kept him outside all day and only brought him in at night. They returned Max to my friend because they claimed he wasn't adjusting. He then offered and gave him to us after we had to put down our last Golden Bonniegirl on Thanksgiving eve at 12 yrs old. Max is crate trained and learned sit, come and in your crate in less than 2 days with us. He is a big bucket of love, keeps us laughing but is very shy at times. Socialization is in order. When it comes to people recall he has the memory of a goldfish!!. I can be with him all day, work him with the clicker, play fetch for an hour, have him on my lap on the couch watching tv. Then leave for an hour and come back and it's like the first time he has ever seen me. Anyone who lives in the house the same. He has been here 9 days not 1 accident in the house, eats fine but he is a big scaredy dog. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for the two weeks he was with the family that returned him. At first I thought it was a male thing, as if my two older sons come downstairs he will hide behind the recliner. He gathers all his toys at times and brings them behind the recliner too. He is not aggressive in anyway. If anyone comes over he will go to my bedroom and up on the bed he goes and goes to sleep. Won't come out until they are gone. His first Sunday here which was day 4, my daughter and her friend came over and Max stayed on our bed for 6 hours. Other than his shyness he is perfectly behaved except for the occasional mouthing when playing on the floor .

He is lovely! hopefully he gets past his shyness and comes out of his shell! I have a cat I rescued from the SPCA 14 years ago (he'll be 16 in January) and he used to do the same thing when we had our house. He didn't like strangers, and would stand in the doorway as far as possible and watch them, but not get within reach. It worried me for a bit, but the vet and SPCA both assured me that he was staying out of reach so he wouldn't be taken away from us! Hopefully the same is true with this gorgeous fella! All the best

Congrats on Max, you are going to enjoy having a lab. He may just need some time to adjust? I adopted my lab from another house as well and although she was not shy she did refuse food for awhile. Also, I would recommend some puppy classes, even though he is well behaved it will help with his socialization. Congrats again!

A very handsome boy! I agree with getting him in to classes ASAP. It will help with bonding to you as well as socialization. The trainer I work with likes nose work classes to boost confidence in a shy or fearful dog, maybe they would help.

Thanks y'all. Max and my 15 yo son will be going to puppy classes starting in January. Until then the goal for Max is 5 new people a week while on his evening walk. If only he could say what goes through his mind..."Each night the guy who feeds me and plays with me and uses that clicky thing takes me for a walk. It's amazing, at the end of a different driveway each night there is a new people that knows my name"
