We got our puppy about 4 weeks ago and we are so in love with this little guy. We were told that he is a purebred yellow Lab. When we got him he really looked like a yellow lab (in the pic on the right) but as he has gotten older, he doesn't look as much like what I would expect a lab to look like (like the picture on the left) we are new to labs though. Our vet said he is pretty small for a lab and someone also mentioned that his coloring is strange (in the sandbox picture his head looks almost white but it was just sun glare, he is mostly a brownish gold color with a white blaze on his chest.) I would love opinions from some experience lab owners.
We made a mistake when purchasing him and DID NOT see the parent's in person but we were provided pictures of the parents and litter mates (he was the last one for sale) No matter what we will love him completely, just curious what you all think. Thank you
He is so cute! He very well could be a mix (something about the way is ears are set on his head makes me think terrier) but I wouldn't fret it, just love and enjoy your little guy.

He does look like he could potentially be a mix, but also while lab puppies are growing they can grow crazy in all ways. So I would just love him, enjoy his cuteness, and see how he turns out

There is just one standard to the breed, but purebred Labradors run the gamut. If the dog was pet-bred, typically they take two dogs with AKC registrations and put them together without regard for temperament or the breed standard. That said, I have met two people now that bought *purebred Lab puppies* (both yellow) that were actually Chihuahua mixes!
I would be more concerned with health issues as most dogs such as this are not bred with regard to health and they do not come from stock that received genetic testing for things such as hip and elbow dysplasia, retinal disease, heart disease, etc. Here is a link: Why Genetic Testing is Important.
If my puppy did not have genetic testing done on the parents, I'd be more likely to go ahead and get pet insurance right off the bat. I'd also be more cautious with temperament. Not necessarily aggression issues or anything like that, just that the temperament might not be what you were expecting in a Lab. Get the pup to class and keep up with your training and consistency. Some of the pet bred dogs can be a bit trying and difficult to live with as youngsters.

Oh my, what a cutie!
When talking about yellow labs that can range from a very light cream to what is called a fox red and everything in between. Also, white on the chest is not unusual but not often more than a few hairs on a well bred lab. The lighter body and light caramel ears is also typical of a yellow lab, just like the one laying at my feet.
Not good at guessing mixes at all. His parents may be labs but they may have a mix in their background. Whatever, he is one of a kind and sounds like the perfect match for you. Keep posting pictures, we love to see them grow.

I think he's really a Pie dog. Half cutie-pie and half sweetie-pie. And who doesn't love pie? What is his name?

I just love this, it really put a huge smile on my face!
And I agree, he is just precious! It is really hard to guess, especially while they are so little. As someone else mentioned above a growing puppy seems to change daily. I completely agree with the suggestion of pet insurance and training, puppy k SHOULD be a requirement. A lot of what your puppy will be will depend on what you put in to him. From diet, to training, exercise and love, you have the ability to make him the best dog possible!
