Unhappy My lab urinates near the back door! Help!

I have a 7 month of female yellow lab that for the most party is trained pretty well. The problem my wife and I are having is that she has been urinating outside of our back door when we leave her in the backyard by herself. We are not leaving the house or anything and we are typically in the family room where she can see us. When we crate trained her, we would take her out to a grassy spot in the backyard and she would go pee without any problems. She also poops in the same area on her own and has never pooped on the concrete. Even when I'm in the yard with her and I walk over to her spot, without the leash, she will go on her own like she's supposed to. It is only when I go inside for a while, she does not want to go to the spot we've taken her on the leash and decides to go on the concrete right outside the back sliding door.

This is very frustrating! Please help me!!!

    Thank you.

IMO the behavior is pretty self explanatory. Labradors are people oriented. She wants to be with the family and is hanging out near the house, perhaps where she can see you, and is going potty there while she waits to be let back inside where her people are.

You can try to clean the area with an enzymatic cleaner to remove prior urine smells, but I don't think that's going to stop the behavior. Personally, I don't think it's a good idea for a puppy to be outside unsupervised. If you're home, can she not be inside with you?

your post pretty much indicates what your solution is - don't leave her out back alone, especially if you know she has to go and "didn't like where you brought her on leash". Bring her in with you.

For whatever reason it seems like she decided that is the spot she wants to pee in. so you need to keep her away from that area if you really don't want her to pee there. Either via something like light fencing/blocking the area or being outside with her and not leaving her unsupervised.

For the record - my 12 year old lab doesn't want to be outside alone. I still to this day go outside with him for pee breaks - even in very cold, wet, snowy weather. He has zero intrest in "chilling" outside on his own so when we are done, he comes in with me.

Is it a grass spot near the door?

We have a concrete patio outside of sliding backdoor and the grass edge after the concrete is totally destroyed by gigi pee. she most of the times will pee there. we do not have a fenced in yard so she is on a outside 50 ft leash. But it does not matter that few sq ft where she pees.she is 10 months so similar age.

she does spend close to an hr outside a few times a day. she will want to go out and lets us know and once out will hang out before barking at the door to get back. This is a major improvement as lab hate hanging out alone and also she suffered from separation anxiety as a pup.
i remember gigi at 7 month was similar she will not stay outside alone unlike now.

WE have to do refresher training on this every winter. In winter when the ground is covered in snow and so is the deck Oban apparently sees no difference between the two and will try to sneak in a pee on the deck, up against a snowbank left there. The only solution is to go out with him and chase him away when he tries it. He is not out by himself more than a few minutes at any time though, no telling what he'd get up to or into if left on his own.

Thank you all for your responses!

So I don't have any issues bringing her in with me when I come inside. I thought she might enjoy being outside in the backyard for a few while we we're inside doing other things. We have a rod-iron fence that runs along an adjacent street and our property sits up on a hill. She appears to like to watching cars and people in the neighborhood walk by which is why I leaver her out in the backyard for a few. It seems like when she has to go pee, she decides to do it either right outside the back slider or somewhere near it on the concrete patio. I'm just puzzled as to why she won't go by herself over to the grass spot and do it. It's only about 20-25 feet away from the slider/patio.

If she's been inside for a while and I let her out to pee, she will not run over on her own to her spot. If I start walking that direction and get about 15 feet near the spot, she will run by me and pee where she's supposed to. She won't pee in any other spot on the grass which is good.

Could this be something that is just occurring because she's 7 months old? She's gotten very big since when we brought her home so sometimes I forget she's still just a pup.

Ideally I would like her to just go over to her spot whenever she's outside and has to go. That's it! haha

It takes a lot of repetition for a dog to develop a habit. She is seven months, a baby really. Just go out with her and over time you'll be able to see whether or not she feels comfortable doing her own thing. Some dogs just never want to be outside alone. My black dog doesn't mind it at all (he is 6) and my yellow boy can't stand the thought (he is 3). Every dog is different. Just be patient. You have a good two years to go before she is a mature adult.

Thanks for the reassurance. This board has been very helpful.
