    Peeing in Crate

    Struggling with Asher.

He is peeing in his crate and he doesn't mind at all laying in his urine. I'll start with the end of day. His water is finished before 7pm. I get home from work at 830PM. Feed him. Hit the rack by 1030PM. Between 830PM and 1030PM, he poos once and pees a few times. I set my alarm for 0230 to take him out and he has already peed. When I take him out, he pees and poos.

For the AM, up at 0700, out to pee and poo and then eat at 0830. I leave for work at 1130 and right before leaving, take him out to pee again. He generally doesn't poo after 0900 and holds it until the sitter arrives at 4. In the crate until my pet sitter arrives at 4PM. He pees in the crate before she arrives.

On the weekends and in the evenings, he spends very little time in the crate since I have the living room baby gated off. He has had two accidents outside the crate...Has never had any poop accidents.

Today is a good example....I cut my finger and had to run out to urgent care. Left at 1100 but right before leaving, I took him out to pee. He went and we came back in. I got home 2.5 hours later, he was soaked. He doesn't seem to care a bit about laying in it.

What am I doing wrong? Should I be concerned about a possible UTI? I use the enzyme cleaner and always keep him clean. If I don't leave a blanket in there for him, he gets literally soaked so I leave a blanket. Thoughts???

    How old is he?

    How is the poo?

I'd get him to the vet to check for a UTI so you know.

Are you taking him out on a leash? How long are you staying out? What do you do outside when it's potty time?

For the AM, it's odd to me that he is up for 1.5 hours before eating. The act of eating gets the system going and many puppies have to go after. So that might be worth mixing up.

It sounds like maybe he's just not getting out enough or he's distracted when he is out and not actually going or emptying all the way.

SOunds like if he is healthy back to shorter time between breaks and work on potty training again. How much exercise does he get along with how old he is.

    Lets see...

Poo is perfect (as perfect poo can be).

We go out on leash. Down to business, no playing. Been this way since he was 8 weeks old. He does very well on the leash. It's rare but if he doesn't do either, we come back in after about 15 minutes and I take him back out within 30. We spend about 10 minutes out. Sometimes he pees twice sometimes just once. Occasionally he will poo twice but that is generally at 0715 or so.

I feel like all I am doing is taking him outside. Between 0700-1130 I take him out probably 4 times. Between 830pm and 1030 PM, probably 3. On the weekends, he's out every few hours. At night, his last outside is 1030pm and then I get up at 0230 to take him out again. He poos and pees (even though he has peed in crate in that 4 hour span). The longest he has to go is between 1130 and 4PM and then when the pet sitter leaves at 445 and I get home at 0825.

We get up at 0700-0715. I get him outside....0730, I get Samson outside, 0745...make some coffee...feed the kitties, get Samsons food and then Asher his..generally 0815-0830.

I can't imagine how he is not emptying all the way given the number of times I take him out before I go to work or before bed.

Adding...he is 13 weeks old and he gets LOTS of play with my big guy Samson. Before work, after work and all day during the weekend.

What if you put the crate, door open, inside a bigger pen? See if he will leave the crate to pee away from where he sleeps. MIne did. You may still have a pee problem to deal with but at least puppy would stay clean. If he's old enough to feel a pee coming and hold on in time to get out of the crate.

Actually, I started off like that. I did that for two weeks - 8 and 9 weeks old. I used a puppy pad. I closed the pen after he kept peeing at night. I thought maybe it was introducing a bad habit. I'm just not making any progress at all on the pee. I'm afraid now if I use the pen he will poo and that will just take us further backwards. I noticed one time on Saturday when he was laying in the crate (door open) and he started peeing while laying down...or so I thought...its like he jumped up simultaneously while peeing. I can't be 100% sure but it sure looked like it.

    So, a couple things...

I would absolutely remove any bedding inside the crate. Some puppies seem to think that means they can pee on it, and you don't want that to be a habit, where he thinks rugs are a good place to pee too.

If he pees by 2:30 am, get up earlier to get him out to pee, you want to catch him before he needs to go not after.

Is the crate too big? For this age and stage he should only be able to stand up and barely have enough room to lay down. The reason for this is that they (*usually) won't eliminate where the sleep. Make the crate smaller if you have a divider, it may seem cruel but it won't take long if this is the issue.

Do you feed him in the crate? If not start doing that, they (*usually) won't eliminate when they eat, so work with that instinct.

Start putting him in the crate for a few minutes, or 1/2 hour, or more, or daytime nap time when you are home. Maybe he is stressed in the crate and just need more time to acclimate, especially when you are home. Maybe he equates the crate only with bed time and you leaving him, and not as a 'normal' occurrence, so more structured crate time, will help him like his crate better, and always give him good cookies when you put him in there.

I would make sure he doesn't have a Urinary Tract Infection like others have said, it may not be his fault he is going, if he has a UTI.

I also never restrict water consumption, (many will disagree with me and that's OK. My litters have free access to water all night long until 8 weeks old, and they rarely get up to pee or drink it all through the night.) I like my puppies to be able to drink any time they are thirsty, with the exception of night time crating/bedtime after they are 8 weeks old. If they don't have access to water regularly, they will begin to hoard' water when they can get it, and fill their bladders when they can then need to pee a lot. Let him drink whenever he needs to, and he will self regulate.

I also see no issue at all with waiting to feed him since you leave for work later, I make mine wait at least 1/2 hour and usually more to feed them after they awaken, so they don't annoy me with waking up earlier and earlier just to be fed. They get fed when I feed them, and they eat twice a day, usually about 12 hours apart. :-)

There's a good bit of what you indicate that says UTI to me. Take a "first a.m." sample (taken mid-stream) into the vet...he shouldn't have to see Samson to diagnose a UTI.

This ^^^^ make me think ectopic ureter, where the ureter connects somewhere other than the bladder and they can leak, but they pretty much leak all the time. Does he leak urine all the time?

Thanks all for replying. On the bedding, I did take it out for about a week but getting him out of the crate in the middle of the night and him being a mess.....I felt bad for him and for me! So I put the bedding back in. He does get his meals in the crate. I am doing all the same stuff for Asher that I did for Samson...and am failing miserably. The daytime crate is an XL so he has an abundance of room and the night is a medium and he has room. I do have a divider for the bedroom crate. Stupid question --- but how would I collect a urine sample? He is so close to the ground I'm not sure how I could get anything under him?
