    Canine Good Citizen Program (CGC)

Seen a few people talking about "CGC" testing. Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is an excellent goal which we plan for our pup.

Here's some info on it. Don't have to be purebred to sign up for this course or set this goal.

Reading so much about Labs, truly think they need to be challenged throughout their life. Learning new things, getting to experience different things. Definitely not a couch potato breed, unless you truly wear them out and that's where they sleep.

Don't see Labs as "smarty pants" breed. Just see a strong willed dog, that loves to be around their people, pushing their people to "play".

The bonding experience is truly a excellent point. Not just fun, but getting closer with your dog. And with a lab that thrives on human contact, really good fun way to strength the bond.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Actually, I think Labs are extremely intelligent and that is why they get themselves in to so much trouble. Of course they love to play and be challenged but "smarty pants" is definitely a term I would use to describe the ones I have had. To not think they are extremely intelligent will get you in to trouble, very quickly. At least in my experience.

Did not feel the need to have the furkids get a CGC as they were all laid back seniors, easy going, loving life, loving people. Went to a local rescue event with Bandit and CGC testing was offered. Thought, what the heck. Bandit aced it with all the grace of the gentleman he was. AND, he did it totally deaf. As important as the CGC is, working with your dog to obtain the manners that the CGC requires, bonding, and having fun is important.

The day Bandit passed, came home from the e-vet and there in the mail was his certificate.

I agree, labs want to work. I can totally understand why retrievers are so often used as service animals. They have a different skill set from herding dogs, who can work independently. Labs want to work *with* you. They are such great companions.

For those who are taking their labs who are under 2 or 3 for CGC- definitely view it as a learning experience and don't get frustrated if your dog does not pass the test initially. Test day is VERY exciting for young labs. In many cases, the younger dogs could pass the test if no distractions were around but of course, that's a big part of the challenge. Have fun!
