Hey folks. Been working the leash walks with my 11 week old Chocolate boy Briggs. What are some of the better harnesses or and/or leashes you would recommend? Thx!

I like leather leashes myself. I got a 3/4" leather leash when my older boy was little and it is so soft and flexible now. I lost a couple of leashes to his teeth when he was little, not leather but the woven kind. I would not recommend using a flexi-lead at all but especially not when he's little and learning to walk nicely. Flexi leads can be harder to control as the dog wanders back and forth and especially if they see something they want to run toward. They put tension between the collar and the handle so that the dog is constantly feeling pressure in the collar if you don't have it locked into position. Dogs tend to pull against the resistance they feel in the collar and your ultimate aim is for them to not pull but walk along without feeling pressure on their collars. You'd like for them to learn to walk on a loose leash and so a fixed length leather or nylon webbing leash works well. For our obedience classes, all have recommended a 6 foot leash.
As for collars or harnesses, my first suggestion would be to sign him up for obedience classes and see what collar the trainer recommends that everyone use for the class. I've taken classes from a few different trainers around here and each had different collar recommendations, from Volhard training collars to prong collars to a specific harness. It's a good idea to take your dog to obedience classes, we've had several dogs and even though I know the basics of training, the classes really focus you on the training for the 6-8 weeks of the class and then you can sign up for the next level and get another 6-8 weeks of focused classes. It really helps even if you're a seasoned dog owner.

I couldn't agree with Smartrock MORE. Forget a harness unless your aim is to train your dog to pull. Can't figure why people buy those. Probably because people make them and market them.
Anyhow... you're going to be buying a sequence of collars as Briggs grows. So get him in class and see what your instructor recommends and what others are using.

why do all the service/therapy dogs wear harness's...when working at least? probably just for id I guess, but its possible to train no pull. well chili doesnt pull, but I have spent alot of time with chili and he by no means is perfect.
