I have never used prong collar but I do use e-collar. As long as used properly both are great tools. Key is used properly. I needed trained on it as much, or more, than my dog did.
I used a prong too. I only needed it for a couple of places and in a couple of situations. At this point in time I don't even know where it is in my house, we don't need it now. It's a great tool to aid in training.

I haven't read all the responses so forgive me if this has already been suggested!
I read your post and it is exactly what our lab use to do.
We took him to a ton of classes and all they did was recommend the positive reinforcement method of carrying pockets full of treats?!? We did try this method but when he got in the 'zone' no treats mattered!!
what ended this behavior immediately was finding a qualified instructor in the use of an e-collar! We went through Sit Means Sit and in the first class were instructed how to set levels and timing and we have had amazing results!!!!!
Before the instruction, we thought 'e-collars are cruel' but there is nothing cruel about them when used correctly!!
Now walks are stress free and enjoyable for all!!
