    Puppy schedule

So I've read so many forums over the years on puppy schedules but this is my first baby puppy.
I'm following what I've read on puppy and crate training but I'd love any tips you guys can throw out there on how to get puppy to sleep longer through the night.
I already know I'm feeding Jett dinner too late and I'm going to feed him earlier from now on!
So any sample puppy Schedules or routines you can share? Thanks ahead of time!

Your baby isn't yet 8 wks, so I'd not expect him to be sleeping thru the night for a bit. Typical pattern is that puppy will need to potty every 2-3 hrs, so if you are crating, that's on your "dime".

I personally raise my litters in an expen where they also have a potty / pellet pool and crate w/o door initially. That way they can get up, potty, then go back to bed on their own schedule. My keeper stays there after the others leave at 8 wks for my own sanity/ rest until she is old enough to hold her bladder thru the night. I also continue to feed 3- 4 smaller meals per day thru ~12 wks so digestion is enhanced AND w/ this set up, they actually sleep better because tummy is satisfied.

Other than that, all you can really do is make sure water is picked up by ~8pm and play play play til bedtime hoping you've worn them out well. Anne

My WPG puppy (Chi) is the first puppy I’ve had in nine years, since Tux. And Tux was an exceptionally easy puppy. With Chi, the sleeping through the night just took time. She was right at eight weeks when we brought her home, and night number one was awful. She shrieked much of the night and I let her out a handful of times to go potty. Night number two was much better, but we still went out and pottied a few times. She is pretty verbal about her wants and I am a light sleeper. As soon as I heard her start to squeak or bark, I took her potty. And over time things kept improving with how long she’d sleep through the night. Soon I was getting up to potty her just twice at night, then once, and now she can go to bed in her crate at 9:30/10 and is good until about 5:30am which is when I kept up for work so that is what her schedule is set to. Even on weekends, but on the weekend after I do the 5:30 feeding/potty, she’ll go back to bed in her crate for a couple hours and I can sleep. Well except for this past Saturday when she decided to shriek like a banshee in her crate and did not let me go back to sleep. That was out of the norm though. I do have to give her credit, she is now about 5.5 months old and “knock on wood” has not had any crate potty accidents. Just have to be very patient, expect your sleep to be interrupted and broken up for awhile. It’s like having a new baby – I am guessing!

I feed dinner to all the dogs including puppy at about 5/5:30. Puppy does not get any water access after 8pm.

I would not expect my puppies to sleep through the night until they are about 10-11 weeks old. I pick up water a couple hours before bed. Mine seem to always have a "witching hour" around 9PM where they go wacko then pass out. I go to bed at 11PM. So, if they are crazy from 9-9:30PM, I'll pick up the water when they are done being bonkers. They always have to pee every five minutes during that time and then they typically pass out and wake up an hour later for a final pee before bed. I think it's important to take them out when they cry, put them on a leash, stand there like a tree and give them five minutes to do their thing. If they don't potty, scoop them up and put them back in the crate. If they do potty, have a mellow party and put them back in the crate. If it's morning and they are ready to get up and start their day (like 5-6am) give them a snack in a Kong in their crate and go back to bed for an hour or so. They'll start sleeping longer naturally over time.

Eight weeks is REALLY young. Linus was my first 8-week old puppy; the others were 9 to 11 weeks (it just happened that way) and there is a HUGE difference between 8 weeks and 10 weeks. It's crazy how different it is! My next puppy will either be 10 weeks OR I'll take two weeks off of work when I get him (99.9% sure it'll be the latter). I'll never get an 8-week old puppy and have to work. When I got Linus, I was able to work from home a lot and take him to the office once a week plus I had a dog walker, but it was still too much and I was tired. Between 8 and 10 weeks, I have zero expectations as far as crate and overnight behavior. Here was our basic schedule for the first couple of months.

6AM: Get up, potty, feed, play, more potty, more play
7AM: Get ready for work while puppy has a Kong in the bathroom with me
8AM: Potty puppy, put in crate
11:30AM: Dog walker comes for 45 minutes to play with and potty dogs
4:30PM: Home from work. Potty and feed puppy. Play with puppy.
6:30PM: Make dinner, do chores, etc. with puppy crated with Kong or locked in a room with me. Train puppy a little bit.
    8:30PM: Puppy goes insane
9:30PM: Water is up; puppy is out
11PM: Take puppy out to potty, put him in bed in crate
2-3AM: Puppy wakes up to potty

With adult dogs I still try to maintain getting up early to go for a walk, but when that doesn't happen, I basically skip the up at 6am wake-up/play session. It just depends on the day and weather. I'm not much of a schedule person unless I'm forced (like with a baby puppy!).

Zoey and Aimee my labs have been my only 8 week old puppies. My routine was breakfast about 6 to 7 am, lunch about 12 and dinner about 5:30. I never restricted water at all and never had an issue with that

As far as sleep goes, I am somewhat of a night owl and my husband is an early bird so it works out perfect for us. He falls asleep about 9 pm but I am awake until at least 11 pm even when i have to work in the AM. So as puppies they would stay up with me and then get up with him about 5:30 am. I take mine to bed with me, I dont crate at all at night, never have and never had to wake up and take them potty thru the night. I made sure they went right before we went to bed and they were fine.

Our daytime routine was I work 8 to 5. I leave at 7:30 am and always came home for lunch by 11:45 and stayed for about 45 minutes. My husband is usually able to stop home at random times all day long so that varied but I always came home for lunch and I am home by 5:30 each evening. 5:30 to bedtime is dogtime. I do restrict them to whatever room I am in, i have babygates all over the house. I dont use a leash in the house and rarely use crates if I am home.

Potty training was very easy with both of them. I dont know how true this is, I havent owned a male dog but I have been told that females are easier to potty train but I have no idea

Yeah, the early weeks are brutal. Kimber would be crated at 10 pm, then she'd go out at 2 am and 5 am. We didn't wait for her to fuss, we just automatically took her out. She never had an accident in the crate, so I think that worked for her. We got her at, gulp, 7 weeks, so she had a pretty teeny tiny bladder.

Our biggest challenge was getting her to go back to sleep after the 5 am outing. She would bark her little heart out. If there's ever a next puppy, DH and I will have to seriously talk about the morning routine. 5 am is just toooo early!

Lucky for you, more and more breeders are training their pups to a potty pool (wood or paper pellets usually) now. Believe me, after all the sleep one loses whelping and supervising the litter the first few weeks, the last thing I am going to do is get up every 3hrs in the night!!! Just do your diligence in finding a breeder who will make your job easier. I never understand the new owners who don't continue w/ the expen/ potty area. Gluttons I say!!!
