crate training and the first night with Jett

Okay so I was hoping the 36inch dog crate would be okay and we wouldn't have to buy a smaller one -I lost my crate divider, I probably left it at my parent's house in Iowa. Jett was super tired out and fell asleep in his crate last night very nicely. But at 3am he was crying and we woke up to a pee and poop disaster in the crate. Actually, Jett managed to poop right in the middle of the donut of his chew toy. Impressive aim. But he was covered in urine.
My husband wanted to go out and buy woodchips in the morning for him to pee on :P But I told him its because he has too much space in his crate.
So I either have to buy a brand new small crate or find a crate divider? We need it for work tomorrow!! Also, we didn't take up his water early last night because we got home late driving home from Atlanta.
He didn't have any other accidents...at 6am I heard him moving and I woke up and took him outside and he pooped/peed right away. But when I put him back in the crate to get sleep he wasn't having it. I think he barked/cried/whined for a solid 40 minutes or more. Next time I'll feed him around 6 because he obviously was ready. We were laughing/sleeping as we listened to him. Took him back out at 8 for breakfast/play time and then we got a nap in at from about 9:30-10:40 until he woke up again. I should say I hope up because Aric is still sleeping now
But I take him outside and say go potty and he pretty much always does even if I have to redirect him a few times. He's been a good pup so far.
Daisy likes his toys but wants nothing to do with him at the moment. I think he'll win her over with time. How could he not?
Also, Aric thinks Jett should be spelled with one t not two t's. What's your vote?

I'd vote for one T, too.

You say you need a smaller crate/divider for work tomorrow. How long do you plan to leave him in there, expecting him to hold? If too long, it's not going to make any difference how small a space he has...puppies go to the bathroom quite frequently....their bodies hold for only so long.

We have a plan between my work and Aric's to get back every 3 hours or so. I'm a teacher so I'm 7-3 and he is usually 8 or 9ish to 5 or 6. And he plans to come home for lunch.

I don't think he needs a smaller crate, he just needs to go out more often. I will never make the crate smaller again. I even left the door of Oban's crate open. Our first night was like yours and it turned out he needed out twice a night at first. He did, he'd poop on one outing and pee on another. That faded to once a night. At least you don't have the deep snow and cold we had.

Well of course I am partial to only one "t." We have met three other dogs named Jet. All were male, none knew of the semi-precious stone connection, which is actually where the saying "black as Jet" comes from. Two of these dogs were black but one is a Toller and he's named for the husband's job too, jet pilot.

If you feed him at 6 am, he is training you! LOL Feed him when you feed Daisy, and make him adapt to your schedule, not the other way around. If you feed him at 6 am, the next day he will cry at 5:45, until you feed him, and then... 5:30am...

LOL Good thought. During the week though it will have to be 6AM because I go to work at 7AM. On weekends I just like to sleep in

Did you set an alarm to take him out then? Because Jett did not wake us up until AFTER he had his incident. We didnt' get to sleep until late last night probably 1AM so he really was only in his crate for about 2-2.5 hours before he woke us up covered in urine.
He has been pretty good in the house so far today - he either starts whining or sniffing and I take him outside and he pees. I cheer for him and he looks at me like what? me? Okay!!

The first night the poor little beggar SHRIEKED and just like you I finally went down to find him soaked in urine. He had his first bath his first night with us. After that our ears became attuned to the sound of him rustling around in his crate and then we got up and took him out. He never faked us and always slept till then and went right back to sleep.

Where's his crate relative to where you sleep? I actually had 2 crates, a larger one for the living area, and a smaller one on my side of the bed. That way if they started moving around or getting restless in the crate I'd usually hear them right away and could rush outside with them. For us, getting up more than once a night didn't last long and soon they could make it through the night. Having them right beside me in the crate also let me reach down so they could sniff me or I could shush them if they'd been outside within the past hour. About 2 weeks after we got Lark she got some GI upset and she woke up every 2 hours overnight one night and I rushed her out and she had diarrhea every time. If she'd been in another room I'd not have heard her in time.

He'll grow fast and you'll get your schedule down, so I wouldn't get the smaller crate/divider. Also, he may have been anxious/nervous on that first night and that may have contributed everything.

While I agree that a puppy should be on your schedule, between the time they go to bed and 8am they are really hungry! People always say that you should not crate a puppy if their needs are not met: poop, pee, exercise, hunger. Why not throw a frozen Kong snack (or similar) in there with him to snack on while you go back to bed for a bit?

Also, I'd put him in your room for sleeping. That might help both with hearing him if he's needing to go potty and for his comfort level. My bedrooms have always been small, so I've crated in the living room and slept on the sofa for the first month or two.

I like Jet with one T. Two Ts and I'd assume it was a girl for some reason.
