It's standard decor around here. Glad to know we're not the only ones, and the not the only ones with "stuff" on top of the crate.

That reminds me, I need to move the crate out of the living room and back into the kitchen. I moved it to have the carpets cleaned. Not sure why I bothered, they didn't look much better from a so-called professional cleaning than they do when I use my do it yourself carpet cleaner thing. Oh well, now I know.

I've seen ads for some that rival my furniture.

I agree, room design and furniture placement work around a large crate (or more) and I tend to have some on at least 2 floors as I hate lugging them up and down (and for a period we often need one in the bedroom until they can be loose in the bedroom safely). For now there are no crates up (Rocky doesn't need a crate) which is great as we're living on the main floor (which is a "basement" - one medium sized room though when Penny had surgery we lived in this space WITH a large crate and an x-pen!)

I miss having a crate out. While it can be annoying, it also acts as a good drying rack for clothes and temporary shelf :P

Yep, for all those sweaters and items of clothing that say, "reshape and lay flat to dry". Now that's annoying!

You have got a lot of great advice the only thing I can add is you might consider this over the metal pen Xpen
Amazon.com: North States Superyard Colorplay 8 Panel Playard: Baby

Is is a childs playpen and it is plastic, so it protects your floors, plus it is water proof so you can go outside with it if you need to. Also each section can be detached and combines so you can have just 2-3 pieces. One of the things I did for my boy was as he got older I quit using it as a pen and would block of like say just the TV, so that way he wasn't getting into the cords and stuff and chewing or getting rambunctious around it. My sister has one and still uses it with dogs and grand children to keep them from running up and down the stairs at times. I use mine as well, I have a workshop in the basement where I do wood working and so on. If I am running saws and so on he has to leave the shop, I put this up at the door so he doesn't come in, then when done running saws he gets to come back in the shop and hang out. Nice thing is it all folds up and is easily put away.

Yep, I found some nice dark brown crate covers on Amazon for the 3 crates in the living room, made a huge improvement for the crate decor

I've got the lovely crate decor going on as well. . Moose gets over excited in the evenings when he's tired, so a pop in the crate is a bonus, especially since when he's over excited, his tiny companion, Miley (chihuahua) or the kitty tend to be his targets (what's more fun than a moving target? Nothing!). I have never trained a dog with a crate before, but then, I've never had a Moose before <3 either. I have a lovely large yard with a new privacy fence, and do send Moose out there frequently. I do not want to raise up a dog with separation anxiety, so I am a huge believer in giving him time outdoors without me for a period of time every day, weather permitting. Fingers crossed that all my planning works out! I wish my son would build me one, he built a custom one for his BIL a couple of weeks ago (boxer puppy) and it's beautiful. But expensive! Alas, it's getting to be busy season for his business, so that just isn't going to happen.

Maybe don't be too jealous if that create is made from wood- wait and see on that one! Our first 2 dogs were boxers and as puppies they were so bad about chewing things, they were more like beaver puppies! Of our 2 labs, the older one was bad about gnawing, baseboards were a favorite. The younger one never did. Maybe I was more prepared to stick toys in her mouth before she put tooth prints on everything.

At 3 yrs. old and 82 lbs. we retired the crate long time ago.
He now uses the kitchen table, just pushes the chairs out of his way.
