My trainer a long time ago told me to teach them to speak then use the word quiet or enough or hush and when they pause reward. Now when my dogs bark for whatever reason I just have to use the word and they stop.

I think you have to do this before barking has become a habit. Once the barking is ingrained, it's a go-to behavior, like the dogs don't have a lot of control over it. So, you'll have wanted to teach the speak/no speak early on before it became a habit. I think an instead behavior is best for a dog like her. Give her something to do.

It’s getting better in the house, mostly through putting her in a brief timeout. It’s when we are out and about that I want to tackle. She likes to bark “play with me” at passing dogs, and “give me more treats” to the Petco lady. I think treating for hush- even if it’s a brief hush- is my next approach.

I taught them speak early on too. I would get them playing then I would ‘bark’ at them until they barked, then used the word/hand-sign. “Speak, Good girl, Speak!” I did the same with a growl. I would get really in their face while playing and do a soft growl until they growled, then the word/hand-sign and praise. After they have that down, use the command to get them to bark. Once they are barking break their attention with a command/hand-sign: “Enough” and when they stop barking to think about what you just said: praise. At first the stop command needs to be pretty loud, to get their attention. After a while just the hand-sign is enough. Tug is a good game for this as they are excited and you can get right in their face.

None of mine really did uncontrollable barking, or barking for attention, for any length of time. Yes, they all went through a very ‘vocal’ phase but I would just distract them to get them focused on something else. I could not see wearing out the stop command if they were not going to obey. It is like the “come” command. You are not going to just keep yelling it at them if you know they are not going to obey. It eventually has no meaning.

You might try changing what their attention is on. If they are barking give them a ‘job’ to do. My in-home attention phrase is “ooOOHHhh… You know what?” They take notice right quick because I *ALWAYS* know the fun things to do. I can even do long pauses while they stare at me. I just look around like I am looking for something. “Where is… … … …Item ?” “I wonder what happened to … … … …Toy's name ” When they bring it, praise, then ask for something else. They should forget all about barking if you just keep them busy. HINT: A well hidden toy can keep them busy for 5 or more minutes. If they start to get distracted just do the ‘where is ’ again to get them back on track.

Stormy is 4 months old now? She should know several of her favorite toy’s names. Before you go to cook or do dishes or something, scatter some toys around for her to bring back to you. They are so, so proud when they can return the asked for item! I can see the puppy wriggle now, tail swinging the body back and forth.. “I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT!!”
