    Housebreaking tips

The struggle is real, my friends. Stormy is just over 11 weeks but she had two accidents in the house yesterday.

We take her out as soon as she wakes up, or right after a big play session. When she's awake, I take her out at least every 20-30 minutes. (In the evenings, when she's mostly up from 4 pm to 10 pm, that's a LOT of outings.) If she starts sniffing around, outside she goes. Sometimes she goes to the door- and we immediately take her out. If she pauses in play to look at us- outside she goes. Lots and lots of praise for pottying outside. She is never out of our eyesight when she's awake. We crate her when we're busy cleaning/cooking. Knock on wood, she's never messed her crate.

Accident #1 yesterday: DH played with her outside for an hour. She pottied outside. They came back inside and she immediately squatted and peed in the kitchen.
Accident #2 yesterday: She was 15 minutes past her last outing. She was playing tug vigorously. In the middle of tug, she squatted to pee. I clapped my hands, DH scooped her up and rushed her outside. Only a little pee on the carpet, she finished up outside. (Praise for peeing outside; nothing done in reaction to the squat inside, aside from the clap that startled her.)

She doesn't drink a ton of water but she does pee a lot. She pees probably 90% of the time when I take her out following the clock, not because she's giving any sign of needing to pee. All of the accidents seem to come with no warning. I pick up water at 8 pm, but will give her ice cubes afterwards. But no problems so far after bedtime.

I feel like we're doing all the recommended things. Could it be a UTI? Or do I just need to be patient?

(We got Kimber in the summer and had the backdoor open so she was outside much of the day; I think that really diminished inside accidents.)

I would get her checked for a UTI. It's not fair to her if she has one, know what I mean? Once you determine whether or not she has one, keep doing what you're doing and be patient.

Yeah, I think I'll try and run some urine in to the vet. Now to catch a sample. That should be interesting...

Yep, run a urine sample in to be sure.

Make sure she doesn't have a lot of freedom, like baby gates to cordon off the space she can be in. You might also consider tethering her to you, with a lead, so you can catch her in the act. I also give small cookie for peeing outside at this age, but wait until she is done peeing, just a soft quiet "good potty, good girl, good potty" while she is peeing, then when she is done big party and a cookie. I also potty on leash for now, and once they go potty, they get play time outside before we go back in, this way they don't wander the yard, play with sticks and leaves, then go back inside and they forgot they had to pee. Potty business on lead first, then reward(s) food, free playtime, toss some toys, affection etc... I also do not ever restrict water, they will hoard it when they have access and need to pee a lot.

Try to get the first urine of the day. A vet tech I met years ago suggested a long handled soup ladle - brilliant!

We also thought Lido wouldl never "get it". We took him out all.the.time... We had him checked for a UTI as well. Even though he tested negative, with very minimal crystals showing (sometimes because the sample has matured), our vet treated him for a UTI. I took him outside on leash, even though we have a fenced in yard, so that he would tend to business. After he went, he was allowed off leash to play. Finally, the lightbulb went off and he was potty trained-don't remember the exact age! It was a miracle! Hang in there and keep doing what you're doing. Definitely limit where Diggity is allowed to go in the house. Crate when your eyes aren't directly on her.

I'm having the same issue with Ruger he's 12 weeks. I never had this much trouble with any of my other dogs. I've been keeping a log anytime he goes in the house to see. He's pooped and peed in the house. He sometimes whines at the door and I make a big fuss. I try and get him out every half hour and he goes Everytime but sometimes comes in and pees 10 mins later. It's frustrating but I know one day he will get it. He's never gone in his crate.
