What to put in crate when puppy rips up everything including beds, towels and blankets!

    Hi,
We have an 11 month old puppy. He is fully crate trained and has been since the day we got him however recently he has started to rip up anything we put in his crate so we took everything out and now he currently lies on the bare metal tray of the crate. This however makes him refuse to go in his crate and we have to drag him in.
Once in his crate he sometimes whines then settles down but wakes up and starts scratching/digging on the metal tray. We don't know what else to put in the crate to stop the noise of the scratching/digging and to make him like the crate again. He has never had any problems going into the crate until now where there is nothing in.

    Any advice, much appreciated!
    Thanks

Our lab has had a Primo Pad in his crate since he was a puppy. We've never used any other bedding.

Are you crating him during the day when this happens, or is this at night? It might be that his need for exercise has gone up a bit. Another option is to use frozen Kongs. Archie usually gets two a day -- one in the morning while I shower, and one at night while we eat dinner. (I use part of his daily kibble, soaked with water, a little sweet potato, a little plain yogurt, sometimes other random treats, with a baby carrot shoved in the end. Freeze it, and voila. We own four Kongs so I can always have a couple frozen.)

    Good luck!

I've heard of using cow mat cut to fit very tightly so pup can't get a corner up and chew on it.

maybe a plastic tray (instead of the metal tray, some creates have a more plastic-y tray)

have heard good reviews of the primo product above but have never used one myself

ETA: oh I know some people who get horse stall padding? cut to fit. something like that, maybe someone who knows horses/barns knows what I mean.

I second Primo Pads - no more beds were chewed up after we switched to that.

I would look into upping his exercise time also. If he does not have another outlet to release it, he will make his own. Destroying stuff seems like a lot of fun, and once started he probably feeds himself to do more.

What is his energy level like? What sort of exercise does he get?

When my very energetic black gal, Sunshine, was 12 weeks old she NEEDED 3 or so hours a day of off leash run like a nut time. By one year old it was at least 4 to 5 hours a day. This is aside from training and regular play time, she is an active little dickens!

I did not use a crate, she would have gone out of her mind. I enclosed an area of the kitchen for her. I put a few pieces of Oak firewood, kongs and her stuffed buddies in there. I could let her run for two hours, put her up and leave for a few hours. When I got back, Boy OH Boy did it look like she had fun while I was gone!!!

While it won't completely stop the noise, putting something like a bath mat between the tray and the wire bottom of the cage can muffle it slightly. We have plastic trays in ours now but had to replace the first one that came in Chase's crate because his digging caused a crack and then he was ripping the tray apart.

I've heard horse stall mats and primo pads work well but haven't tried them. Not sure what would be easiest to get where you are but I think this is the type they mean for horse stall mats.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Hi! Our dog has nothing in her crate for this very reason. She loves her crate and goes in willingly. (she is almost 7). She gets a lot of attention and excersice on a daily basis, and is only home in her crate for about 7 hours at a strech while I am at work (I am a teacher.) Addie is a great dog! This wasn't the case when she was a puppy of course! And yes, she "digs" enthusiastically in her crate from time to time. This is an instinct behavior I believe, roughing up the environment to "make" a comfy sleeping spot.

    Good luck!

We had to.remove the pad but then used a fleece blanket and he never has never chewed it. It's the only.thing he hadn't chewed. Ha. I guess it suited him better. We have the plastic tray liner also.

Same here. Thor isn't very into beds and really prefer spreading out on cool hard surfaces. Probably because it's summer in California. He gets chew toys in the crate and that's about it.
