    Update on daisy day 2

Morning all! I figured I would update everyone on daisy's day 2 of potty training. I believe she has a hard time focusing when I take her out to potty. The leaves and rocks don't help the situation. But she has begun to come around now. When we take her out I tell her "go potty!" And walk her around the grass. If she gets preoccupied by a leaf then I move her to another area in the grass. If I see her sniffing is usually a sign she may go potty.

Everytime she goes I give great praise! One time last night I think she didn't want to go but I was so persistent I think she thought "if I go potty I can go back inside" and she finally just gave up and went. When I do take her outside and she doesn't go I avoid the risk of her going potty inside by placing her in her crate and after an hour I take her out and she will go.

If she goes potty I let her run around and play in our place because I know she went and most likely won't have to go. I always keep a watchful eye on her though at all times. I don't trust her yet. She hasn't pooped ever in our place. I tale her out after every meal and we still limit her water intake.

She also plays rough at times at if this happens she usually cannot calm down so I put her back in the crate. I don't want to be one of those people who crate there dog all the time. She is my family member and I want her around all the time.

We did go over my parents house yesterday aND she had afew wee accidents. It's a new place to her and there were a lot of people and they have two dogs as well. I think it was too much excitement for her. Other then that she had no accidents yesterday and I would like to think she's learning perhaps and some of it has to do with how persistent I have been and keeping an eye on her at all times. What do you guys think?

I think you're doing a good job keeping an eye on her and starting to learn her signs. Didn't I read that she's just 7 weeks old? She's still such a baby that she doesn't understand yet what you're trying to teach her, but she'll learn. A human baby wouldn't learn to use a potty until they're like 2 years old, much less a month or 2 old. So think of the puppy as a baby who is learning what is expected and needs lots and lots of patience and praise. At this point, if she wees in the house, it's on you, not on her, because she's still learning and cannot hold her urine long anyway. Some of the pups on here have taken until they're 4 or 5 months old to understand they need to go outside, not inside. Playing, excitement, all that will increase the likelihood that they will have an accident inside so what you did with letting her play some inside after she's gone outside is a good strategy.

I'm not sure what you mean by limiting her water intake. My dogs have water at any time of the day, even as puppies, although some people will take up their water an hour or 2 before bedtime. My pups sleep in a crate in my bedroom as puppies so I can hear if they start fussing and need to go outside. They don't get water during the night, but up until bedtime they can drink if the want to.

It's OK to use the crate for a brief time out or for nap time if she seems over excited. Just be calm when putting her in so it doesn't seem like a punishment, you don't want a bad association with the crate. Sometimes my puppies would be acting wild and out of control when they were tired but they were too revved up to know they needed to take a little break.

Sounds like you're doing well for just 2 days!

She is going on 13 weeks. We just don't leave water readily available. We give her water here and there and def take it away a couple hours before she goes down for the night. Glad I'm doing well. Thank you for hope advice and experiences.

smartrock, I looooove your avatar pic! So sweet! Our neighbour has a lab that looks just like your bigger one, and your smaller one looks like our Sophie.

On to the important question...bowl of water in the crate? Yay or nay? I tried it once with the typical stainless bowl with the rubber base ring, but it got emptied rather quickly in a game of splash. I've seen the crate-mounted bowls...good idea or...?

I wouldn't give water in the crate but I never limited water for any puppy except for maybe an hour before bedtime. Honestly, I think you are expecting an awful lot from such a young puppy, JMHO.

Thanks...not sure if your second sentence was directed toward me or not...I didn't know what to expect, which is why I tried it to see!

First of all, I did not mean any disrespect by the comment and it was directed at the OP, I apologize for not clarifying.

A puppy will probably just make a big mess if given water in their crate! That is an invitation to try creating their own swimming pool, lol!

No problemo...and you're right; that's exactly what the little darling did! Thankfully I found that out quickly so it didn't get the chance to soak into the laminate floor. That floor's never been washed so often before! lol

I gave my Sophie water in her crate from the time she first arrived, until I stopped having her sleep in the crate. I tried with Bruce, but he seemed to think the dish was to swim in. I tried 3 different types of clip in bowls, and the stinker figured out how to knock them all off and create a wet mess. So I finally gave up, and he gets no water in the crate anymore.
