I think the lack of exercise enforced on you and Oliver by the weather plays a big part. I know it has affected Archie. Right now we have a good 8 inches of snow topped with an inch of ice. He has such a hard time taking a walk or running off energy. We, too, are expecting more normal temps in the coming week, up to 50 - YEAH! Planning on running his buns off. Of course, then I have to deal with the muddy feet.
Archie is a constant shadow but understand it is a trait of GSD's, more so than labs. If I sit to watch a TV program, he sits in front of me and he's fine if I'm petting him the entire time. If I stop, he's licking or being antsy. Exercise will calm that down some.

You took the words right out of my mouth! The puppy wakes me at 6:30 sharp and then I put them outside for about 20 mins. to potty, etc. while I make coffee and wake up. I go up to my office and there they are staring up at me from outside. I let them in and they start "wrestling." I put them out because I don't want the rough housing in the house. They stare at me. I feel guilty. I go out and grab the chuck it. Barley wants to play and Moby is happy because then he can eat grass and maybe chase Barley a wee bit. (He is 13 1\2 after all so there is not a ton of running about. ) We play and then I take them in. They stare at me like "what's next?" I then feed them and they are happy and I have a break for a bit. My dogs are lucky because I can work from home a fair amount and they have each other. I try to get the puppy at least 2 walks a day but some days don't work out quite that way. Do your best and try not to feel guilty. You need to live your life and can't entertain them all the time. I have started taking Barley to doggie day care once a week when I have long work days. He is so tired and has had such a good time that I have some peace of mind and have a smidge less guilt. Yes, it is expensive but my piece of mind is seriously worth it.

A pizzle stick or a pressed pork bone will keep Sophie busy by herself for awhile, but if I'm in another room she is usually contained to "her" room, our sitting room, using baby gates. Sometimes she's a little needy and wants us to sit down and hold her bone for her (just to get her into it), but after a minute or two she grabs it and moves to another spot in the room to go at it herself. She'll chew away for at least half an hour.
