    Found her voice

Recently our puppy has found her voice! Anytime she hears something or sees something (like a cat) outside she starts barking and growling, is there anyway to deter this, it takes a long time for her to calm down. And we would prefer that she doesnt get a bad habbit. Only problem is that we now live with 2 beagles, who are constantly barking.

Teach the quiet command. When she starts barking say quiet. The instant she stops for even a second, treat and praise. Keep it up until you know she understands the command and then start fazing out the treats.

I also find it really helps to "go check it out". I always look and see what Luna's barking at, tell her "thanks Loon" or "it's okay Loon" and go back to whatever I was doing.

If I don't go check it out, she comes and gets me and makes me check it out. She's just being protective.

Barking for attention is a different story. Luna hasn't done that, so I don't have advice on that part.

Great advice doubledip1. Forgot about that. Archie will bark and if I don't check out what he is alerting to, he continues. If I check and tell him it's OK, he settles down. It's his job to let me know what's going on and my job to listen to him and acknowledge what he does to protect.

How old is your pup? Maverick started letting out the huffy barks when he was around 4-6 months old. I'd check it out then distract him so that he'd forget about it. It seemed to be near windows or the glass cabinets in our tv stand. I think he was seeing glimpses of himself to be honest.

She is 6 months old and this just started. The quiet training seems to be working, mostly, but she gets extremely worked up during the evening when she can see herself in the windows. I go to the window and tell her its ok then walk away, but she gets herself so worked up, it can be hard to calm her down when shes seeing herself or us in the windows.
