Each puppy is different. Angus (now just turned two) was fully out of his crate by five months and it was packed up and put away. It came back out with Kona (just turned 9 months) who no longer naps in it in the daytime in it but races to it each night at bedtime. Dreama - at just turned 5 months - LOVES her crate at day and at night. I'll put her in for a nap after a morning of exercise and training and normal activity and after two hours or so, I'll ask " are you ready to come back out and join the pack?" - typically I get a blink of the eyes and over she'll roll for another hour or two of rest time. At bedtime, she also goes straight in and waits for that last treat.

My rule of thumb is to follow the dog's lead. They will typically let you know when they can be trusted to roam free at night (all of our older ones who are uncrated at night move about the house - it sometimes seems as if they are on "watch" and changing out shift work!). I have a feeling that these last two puppies will be crated at night for longer than I've ever crated a puppy because they appear to LOVE that quiet and safe time - and I will give it to them for as long as they need it.

At 8 months, your puppy is still learning about life and still needs added security at times. The crate provides that when used correctly so your decision to place him
back in it at night is a good one for now. In a month or two, you can leave the door open and see what he does.
