Looking for some tips on learning to walk/tolerate a leash

We are just in the beginning stages of a leash. I have attached it and let him walk around with it so he gets used to the feeling of the pull, of course he chews it lol But we havent gone any further than that. As he becomes more adventurous I want to get this started. Looking for some tips on how to approach this.

You really should enroll in puppy class for hands-on learning.

As far as tolerating a leash, it comes with time and experience. Walking on a leash right now is basically luring. Hand with treat at your pants seam. One step, treat and praise, working your way up. The key to walking a dog on a leash is to never let them learn that pulling is an option.

so in the vein of never to let them learn that puling is an option does that mean that a harness to protect the puppies neck is out of the question?

No, feel free to use one. I have one for my 1 year old. A harness is, however, an aid and it will not help them learn how to walk on a leash.

Updating on our leash experience. I am not sure if I read it here or somewhere else but some where I saw a tip to place s stick in their mouth when you are walking to keep them from biting the leash. So I tried it and in less than a week he is walking without biting at all! He only carried the stick for a few days. Tonight we went for about a 20min walk and he did amazing! He is consistently sitting when asked and we are working on stay. I havent really worked alot on heel but I do keep him to one side of me and when we are walking we stop every so often and sit. He is such a little sponge and learns so fast!!!

Using a harness won't teach them not to pull. And if you never let them pull, then you don't need a harness.

depends on what type of harness, my trainer gave me one of the front ring type and I've used it and just the collar at home, the difference is like night and day,
71 lbs of puppy can generate a lot of pull, much less with the harness.

Yes, they can pull, but my point is, never let them pull, as in never give them the option to pull, regardless of age or size or collar or harness or whatever you use.

Please what? What would be the point in the dog pulling if it gets them nowhere? It takes patience and consistency for sure, but it's completely do-able.
