4 month old keeps waking up

    Hi Everyone,
My 4 month old lab Milo has been having trouble sleeping through the night. I have found lots of articles about crate training, but that isn't really the problem; he goes into his kennel and sleeps like normal, but wakes up at 4:30am whining. Originally I thought this was because he had to potty, so I took his water away 2 hours before bed, but he still needs to be let out in the middle of the night. The other night I let him out at 3:30, put him back to bed, and he was back to whining at 4:30. This makes me think he may be hungry or thirsty...should I stop taking his water before bed? Or is this just still separation anxiety? Any tips?

    Thank you!

What time do you crate him at night?

I would ignore him or just tell him to go back to bed. if it's alwasy at the same time it may be a sound he hears that wakes him up.

    things to consider:
    - as above, what time is he going to bed/last call?
    - when is he fed? (he coudl be hungry)
    - how much exercise does he get druing the day and when is the last bit of exercisE? sometimes a short play session to get the crazies out about an hour or two before bed (but nto RIGHT before bed) can help.

If he was just out an hour before, he probably doesn't need to go again. Does he get any sort of snack before bedtime? If he has dinner at 5 or 6 pm, maybe he's hungry. You could try a handful of kibble or a small biscuit. Maybe that's when the paper guy delivers the newspaper and the sound wakes him up. I'd try a small bedtime snack.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

I doubt it's a sound, we don't get the daily paper. He gets fed at 5pm and goes to bed usually around 10-11. My money is on the hunger issue, but im open to other possibilities.

yes I would give him some food closer to bed (5pm to 6am is more than 12 hours so he may be hungry). Make sure to reduce his supper to account for the extra food.

    then ignore.

A dog's hearing is very good, could be a neighbour going to work or something that drives by. Or an owl haha. Anything.

What time do you get up in the morning?

And, where is his crate where he sleeps?

I'm voting food, we give a biscuit before bed and our guys get through until about 6;30 or 7.

I would go with the hungry bit as well. I'd give him a bit of a snack about an hour before his "before bed potty" and see if that clears it up. It is probably just a stage too that he will outgrow just as human babies do.

My husband and son both get up at 4 a.m. to get ready for work; the dogs all get let outside and then the puppies get a "bone" as they go back in their crates. When we have puppy sitters, the puppies still want this and need it but the older two just understand that it is something that only happens when Dad and brother go to work (and both of them had the same routine as babies) - so if you are worried about this becoming a lifelong habit of Milo's, I wouldn't worry too much.

My Quincy is getting up every morning at the exact time! 430am! Hes in bed at 9pm sharp though because he turns into naughty puppy around then. I never considered hunger so I am going to try some kibble tomorrow night and see if that helps. I take him out to potty and he usually goes back, with some whining, until 6am. I have a sneaking suspicion its my cats waking him up but it could be hunger too.
