    He's big enough now to.....

    Get on the couches

He's 12 weeks old friday btw... but I tell him down and gently push him off the couch before he gets the whole way up but I don't think it's clicking. It's not like I just tried it for an hour this morning, it's been over a week. But anytime I'm on the couch he's lunging trying to get up also. He's never allowed on the couch, he was up there as a small pup on my lap when he was asleep but that's it.

Any other ideas? Or just keep up with the "down" and set him on the ground?

    Thanks!
    T.J.

Train the command as well. Make sure you don't use the same command as you do for "lay down" (do if you say, low down, then don't use "down" to stay off teh couch - I use "off").

Be persistant. Just keep giving the commadn calmly and then gently moving him off. you may want to try and redirect to a toy or their bed. He likely just wants attention, you can't blame him for wanting to be with you

Also, make sure he doesn't have the chance to get up when you are not looking. either block access to the furniture or tether him to you if you are out of the room and he is likely to try.

Labs are physical dogs and pushing them is attention.

Like Tanya said, don't use the same command that you use for lay down. I also use "off".

Instead of pushing, I say off and give the dog a treat for having four on the floor until they know what it means.

Great thanks guys! And I never thought of the placing them on the ground as not helping the situation. I'm going to switch to using the words off too.

    Thanks again!

Archie does not get up on the furniture but if I'm sitting on the couch, he wants to climb up on me. I too use the command "off". Now he tries to sneak his paw up, stinker. What I'm doing now is telling him off, giving him a second or two to respond and when he does, praise profusely. Don't forget the praise part when your pup makes the correct decision. Be consistent and persistent.

My Quincy is not quite 10 weeks old and has been vaulting on the couch for about a week. Good advice here, glad I saw this!
My cats are a bad influence on him and he thinks he is one! Caught him the other day trying to get in the window with the cat via the end table! He just doesnt understand why he cant walk on the furniture lol
