    Collar Type

I need guidance for collar types. Our 4.5 MO Jaxson pulls constantly when on a walk. Up until now we have used just a regular collar for him. In the past I have used the gentle lead with other Labs. Before that I used a choke chain. The instructor in our puppy class does not like the gentle lead. What is your experience? I have a choke chain for him but didn't have much luck the first time on but I know that it takes a certain amount of training. Thanks for your advice!

I use a Halti - which is like a gentle leader. My trainer recommended the Halti because the gentle leader was wearing off the fur on Daisy's nose. It's helped 100% with Daisy's pulling--but I do think it depends on your dog and your preference. My trainer didn't like the choke chain - my girl had been locked up in a crate in the backyard for a while and had little experience with the outside world and she thought the choke collar might teach Daisy to associate pain with new experiences. Also, I think the Halti works better.

I use the Sense-Ation No Pull Dog Harness (Amazon.com : SENSE-ation No-Pull Dog Harness (Black, Medium) : Pet Halter Harnesses : Pet Supplies) and it works great! This with clicker training and treats has been working really well in stopping my pup from pulling. I started using the harness on the suggestion of my Obedience Dog Club and haven't looked back. I am not a fan of choke chain as it doesn't seem nice for the dogs and I don't want walks to be associated with pain.

We really want to do something different with our Lab pup. So researching harnesses.

    I don't like harnesses.

I use a martingale on puppies, then around 6 months (or whenever they're ready for it) make the switch to a herm sprenger prong for walks, training, etc.

    Just searched martingales.

Martingale Collars | Martingale Size Guide | Greyhound Martingale

Definitely going to consider. My husband likes these and will do great for pup. No noise involved to distract. Understand about the prong. But will make a decision when that time comes. Thanks! My husband thinks this is a good collar to start with for someone who has had a bit of experience with a pup. Not so much a first time dog owner.

My martingale was just like the one in your link. It was all I could find here but you can get them with the sliding part in chain which makes more sound and I think would have helped alert Oban that a correction was coming. On the other hand chain in our choke collar did just that for Jet and she learned to go till she heard the faint chink and then back off. Fine for control but we were working on competitive obedience heeling and the nylon Volhard worked much better for precisely the opposite reason, she couldn't hear the warning chink of the chain so had to monitor her position herself.

Another thing I'd change in the martingale is I'd try to find one that is quick release on the part around the neck. They are supposed to fit up high under the ears but have to be made bigger to go over the head, then tightened up. Loosen to take off. It's fiddly. Most people I see using them must find them fiddly too because most I see are way too loose and hanging down near the dog's chest.

You can get them with chain and quick release.

For that competitive obedience class we were given Volhard collars but use of them was not advised on dogs less than 6 months old or very little dogs.

Thanks so much Snowshoe. Never saw that type of collar before. So out of touch with the new ways, as it was 14 years ago with Jake, and (OMG) 25 years since Ice was a pup. Thanks so much for suggesting to look into this.

    Martingales here, too.

The link shows collars with fabric being the "closing" part....I really prefer the ones with chain in that part. It makes noise to reinforce, but it also provides a smoother (i.e., sometimes quicker) closing if there's little pressure on it.

I have some from the linked company. My chain ones are from RC Pet. My link shows the RC Pet styles and sizes. You can probably get them cheaper through Amazon.
