Look for dry hair or oily hair, thin hair or a spot where a shed is not completely out and the hair is thicker. Look for hair that is different from non-smelly spots, as in the shaft itself is thicker or thinner. Ditto differences in skin, dry or oily, pustules, a different colour. there are a few sebaceous cysts on the back and they can get blocked, inflamed, smelly.

I'll tell you though, I could draw line around the spot on Oban's back that was smelly but nothing there looked any different than anywhere else. WE never did resolve it. It was only in summer and last summer he just didn't have it and not this summer either.

You didn't say the smell comes from a certain spot but there is a certain spot to check. A couple of inches below the base of his tail, on the top side of his tail, is the supracaudal gland. It can get inflamed and STINK. Sometimes it's called stud tail but girls, boys, intact or not, cats and dogs can get it.

I would give his collar a sniff. My dogs get stinky collars. Sam especially likes to rub his head and neck in stinky stuff.

I second that! Mavericks collar smells horrible and I can't get the stink out. I'm just gonna toss it and buy a new one.

Vet says he is fine. He did say I could try changing his food but that sometimes males have a stronger dog smell than a female. I did change his collar because he outgrew the 1st one and it did smell really bad so maybe the new one will help.

I am not sure how old your puppy is but I would strongly caution you on changing his food. Jumping on the food roller coaster with a young puppy is often a huge mistake.

How old is Quincy now? Not into puberty yet, I think? I'm no expert but I'd think if, IF, a male dog was going to smell more than a female just by dint of being male it would be during or after puberty when sex hormones are at high levels in the body. And with dogs testosterone levels will be much higher (some readings say seven times higher) during puberty than at adulthood. This is quite noticeable with male cats and male goats.

I've not noticed it with my dog or any of our male cats but our cats were always inside/outside. With cats I think it's just their urine that smells strongly, not the body of the cat.

How many baths has Quincy had in his short life so far? What shampoo did you use? REally, if it was me, I'd try a thorough bath, with three times as much rinsing as you think is necessary with a shampoo meant for dogs but also meant for odour. And dry him off with towels and a hair dryer. When Oban had his smelly spot on his back he would reek again in less than a day after a bath but then at least I knew it wasn't dirty skin and coat making the horrible smell. It was the easiest thing to try and if you aren't overdoing baths already one is not going to hurt.

He is almost 4 months old. We have bathed him twice and the vet warned against bathing too much. I am using Hartz puppy shampoo. It was all that I could find in our small town. I am driving to Petco today so I might inquire about a better brand. Years ago we used a brand I think it was Lambert-Kay or something? Anyway, the scent lasted a really long time but now I cant find it in the store.

Lol, I hope my dogs don't stink! Maxx just got his very first real bath, he is almost 4. Emma had maybe her 3rd at almost 10. My 2 do swim daily from late Spring until early Fall and are thoroughly rinsed afterward but other than "spot bathing" if they get in something stinky that is it.

A healthy Lab should not smell at all...they should be pretty much odorless.

Have you tried puppy wipes at all? I usually wipe Murphy down with those when he comes in from outside (feet, chest if he lays down, etc.) and he seems to be smelling "decent". I think Nature's Miracle makes a line of neutralizing wipes, but I'm not sure how well those really neutralize. I plan on trying those once I run out of the package I bought the other day. A friend recommended them to me after her beagle had a strange smell and they helped to manage the odor.

Also - I read online that you can make your own neutralizer out of baking soda and vinegar. Again, haven't needed to try it yet, but I plan on doing so in the future. (see below - I copied and pasted)

Place 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar into a spray bottle (preferably with a fine mist).
After the foaming action stops, add 2 cups water, then shake well.
Spritz the air. Also spritz any water safe fabric/carpet.
