Sophie's day out at the market fair!

Hello! We met up with our trainer for Sophie's real outing other than pet smart. She did very well once she calmed down. I learned that it is a good idea to exercise her before going on an outing to calm down the energy and help with focus. I learned to walk the great perimeter of the area before going in closer to people as a way to calm her down and be more subdued. Then we worked on walking closer, stopping when people get close and having her sit. Rewards were many including verbal praise. I learned to keep a short corded leash behind me as to keep her very, very close to my body to keep her under control. Soon, Sophie was displaying calmness when people walked by, due to she was tired and more likely to listen better. We did use a few people to pet her and she was made to sit first. The trainer did say that I should call out to people on my block "I am training here, do not call out to her" in order to not entice and excite her. She also had me stop her and get her to refocus on me when she lost her focus due to distractions by having a treat and having her make eye contact as a way to get back into gear. Sophie was EXHAUSTED, mostly due to our very very hot and muggy weather at 9 am! I was dripping in sweat! Florida weather is a killer...-attachment-aspx-2-jpg-sophie-day-jpg I am in the white shorts! I may use your techniques. My Jax gets all excited at New places and barks at people who choose to ignore him...He is a ham.

    Great job Sophie!

Archie's trainer often has drop in days where we meet and walk around town encountering different situations. Great help with socialization.
