    Teething help

I need help with my teething puppy. He hates cold/frozen chews. He likes Bitter Apple and Bitter Yuck (he tried to eat the bottles). He loves chewing on wood, especially the built in bookcase in my apartment which may have lead paint on it. He chews on his leash when I tether him to me so he can't get to the bookcase. He is spending way too much time in his playpen in the kitchen because that is the only place he can't destroy anything.

I never had a problem giving them thick rawhide chips or marrow bones (minus the marrow) or puppy nylabones.

Put him in a crate with different types of chews like bully sticks, filled kongs, etc. You can get an x-pen and put him in there while you are in the room with him instead of tethering. You can also use a chain leash for tethering -- they use to sell them at grocery stores. Or, give him a toy while he's tethered. They have to chew; can't help it. You just need to find something he likes to chew on.

A Golden Retriever puppy friend was great for Oban. Seriously, I think that's where most of the teeth, and blood, went.

ETA: I did also have two of those white rope bones, soaked, wrung out and frozen, rotated them. Maybe a wee bit of chicken broth in the soak water would encourage your pup to teeth on them? You'd have to watch closely that he doesn't try to swallow. Well, as you do with anything puppies chew on.

The edible nylabones helped to distract Murphy (for a while, at least ) from my hands and furniture. Although they made a mess, he seemed to LOVE them. When they got down to a small size where he could choke on the piece that was left I threw it away. I would love to go and buy more, but I just hate the mess that they made. If you end up purchasing them, be sure to keep your puppy in an area where the floor is easy to clean/vacuum. Also - "long lasting" meant nothing; he had the entire thing devoured in about an hour. It did help to get some of the biting energy out though (I bought the bacon flavored 2pk at Petsmart for around the same price Pet Supplies : Pet Chew Toys : Nylabone Healthy Edibles Longer Lasting Chicken Wolf 2pk : Amazon.com )

I also highly recommend a rope toy. Murphy loves to chew on that for hours. Whenever he begins to get mouthy, I just put the rope toy in his mouth and he chews away. Ice cubes on a tile floor also work wonders!

As I sit here I look to my left and see a perfect line of toys: a jack shaped rubber toy, a plush no longer squeaky toy, 2 kongs right next to each other, 3 connected rubber rings and a rope bone. I do not know where the 2 puppy nylabones, kong puppy chew stick, and octagonal kong ball thing have gotten to but they are around. What did he want to chew on? My desk, both the the wood and the metal hardware. He would not be distracted/redirected.

He is currently in his x-pen in the kitchen (5 feet from the living room around the bookcase). I cannot put it anywhere else because he pulls up/eats carpet. He has no objection to chewing on metal so a chain leash would just destroy his teeth. I have tried stuffing kongs but so far the only filling he liked and did not make him sick was canned tripe and I cannot stand the smell. Any cheap non-dairy, peanut butter free(according to Fenway peanut butter is not edible), not cold kong stuffing ideas welcomed. I will be getting more bully sticks as he likes them but they go so quickly especially when I have to take them away when they are 4 inches so he does not swallow them.

Sometimes too many options is a problem. If you let him have one toy at a time and consider it special, that might help. It's worth a try.

How much exercise and mental stimulation is he getting? Playing with other dogs/puppies really let's them let off some steam and gets them tired.

I agree with Labradorks, maybe too many toys out at once. A tip I got was to rotate toys. We would put them all away at night. That's something some dogs will do with you, a fun game you can teach them. Pick up their own toys and put them into something you can close a lid on. Oban actually did that on his own for a few weeks. Anyway, Up we'd get in the morning and I'd take a fresh toy out of his basket (which he could not reach) and it would be like brand new to him. He
d play with it for, oh, maybe five minutes. LOL, they really are like small children. But I never had more that 3 tows out at once and each day it was a new three. A re-newed three.

Have you tried a thick, braided bully stick? One lasted Maxx all the way through teething until his adult teeth were all in. You can try fruit in the kong, mash up bananas, apple slices, blueberries, sliced strawberries, etc. I always mix in some plain yogurt with the fruit. Also, green beans and sliced carrots with a little cottage cheese. My 2 like them frozen but they would be fine unfrozen too.
