    Sleeping time

Hello, every night around 9-11pm I go to sleep and so does my dog naturally but she seems to have difficulties sleeping by herself next to my bed so the last two nights I've taken her to bed with me where she's able to sleep 8 hours or so straight with no problems. And my question would be is it bad if I take the lil puppy to sleep with me?

    Thank you,
    Strength and Honor

There are many folks who let their dogs sleep in their bed with them. Many have found their puppy seems to sleep better or longer when they are in the same bed. I think it is a very hard habit to break, so if you do not think you will want the puppy sleeping in bed with you 6 months from now or a year from now, I would not let her do it now. Plus, if she does have an accident, she's in your bed so it would be harder to clean up. If you are happy with the arrangement, you do not have to change.

Also, puppy's bones are still growing and more easily damaged when jumping from heights. I would not let the puppy jump off the bed if your bed is up on a frame and the surface is more than about one foot off the ground. Jumping down puts a lot of impact stress on their elbows and shoulders and can be harmful to growing bones.

I hope you and your puppy are doing well!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Don't roll over on her and squash her. The only problems likely to occur will be when she gets old and some ailment prevents her getting up on the bed with you, the hardest part of which is how she gets back down again. Then you will have to sleep on the floor with her.

Seriously, I just like the dog to be on the floor. But I always give in by the time the dog is around two years old. Then my rule is, you don't get up on the bed till you are invited and if you get down once you can't come back up. I might worry a small puppy would get hurt trying to get down from a high bed on her own.

In complete agreement with Snowshoe. The rules in our house were no dogs in bed, then we gave in because its nice to have him up there while we read. We just took a little extra time to train him on when he is allowed in bed. By invitation only. If it is hot, all we have to do is tell him to kennel up and he pops off the bed and sleeps in his kennel (until morning when for some reason i can't move my legs :-))

It's so hard to resist My 4 month old isn't very trustworthy yet, but is large enough to get on and off the bed. We occasionally let him sleep in the bed with us, but having him sleep sometimes in the bed & sometimes in the crate makes it less of a habit for him and more of an exciting one time thing.

same here, Boomer is 5mo and the GF brought him up in bed for the first time 2 weeks ago. He loves it but anytime she's not there he's in his crate and doesn't complain about that either. My bed is pushed against the wall and a dresser surrounds it at the feet so the only way for him to get out is over us. He has yet to try and escape but we'd know if he attempted to.

We always thought we would wake up if he escaped (and the one other time we did), but one time we didn't and when we got up in the morning, he was asleep in his crate. Guess we'll never know what he did during those midnight hours!

There is nothing wrong with letting your puppy sleep in bed with you and I personally prefer it that way. All of mine sleep much better and longer when they are in bed with me

We home older dogs so jumping up and down off the bed is hard for them. I'm so afraid they might get hurt. However, with an able dog, I don't see any problem with them sleeping with you if that's what you want. Archie would be sleeping with me if 1) he would settle down, and 2) my face did not swell up with an allergic reaction.

Mine have always slept in bed either with us or Chloe sleeps with my 14 year old daughter. The puppies will eventually sleep in a bed too - one with us and one with our 12 year old daughter, but we don’t really allow that until they are trustworthy out of the crate. I worry too much about what might happen if they woke up and got off the bed without my knowing, LOL.
