That is awful. I do know many that have used the donut type collar after surgery without problems. I have only had one dog sent home with the "cone of shame" only to use if necessary. I never had to put it on her, thank goodness. She is such a flighty dog so I am sure it would have freaked her out. Maxx did not have one with his neuter at all. I am home all day with my dogs so maybe that helped. I definitely would not want to pass bad advice on and never would have suggested it if I had not heard multiple success stories.

I ended up getting an inflatable collar because our Rosie couldn't get up the stairs with the regular type cone. It was also more comfortable for her. She ate and slept with it on. However they can reach the incision spot if you do not watch them.
I used a blow up cone on Bandit. It worked but he was much older and more settled. Wonder if a pair of men's underwear with his tail through the slot would help.

When Chloe had her leg splinted for several weeks (tendon injury) we borrowed a Bite Not collar from a friend Pet Supplies : BiteNot Collar 6 x 27 : Pet Recovery Collars : Amazon.com It was WAY better than a cone and more effective than the inflatable kind.
I don’t think you can just run out and buy them from a store though - she is a vet and her clinic carries them or you can order on-line. Not sure I’d bother for something like a neuter where it’s only really going to be for a few days but for a longer term issue, absolutely.

I have been through several cones.
My dog gets the plastic ones off in no time (I've tried a few types) and then chews them up.
He can lick and chew around the blow-up ones.
We've had the best luck with the comfy cone. It lasted ten days, which is a miracle around here. Eventually he got it off, chewed it up and shoved it under the sofa.
I did not try the bite-not collar on my Houdini Lab but it gave my black Lab an awful hotspot when he had to wear one. I wouldn't use it again, personally, but it sounds like some people haven't had a problem.
The shorts/men's underwear worked for us. However, not sure I'd leave them on a five month old puppy unsupervised.
A determined puppy is liable to get any of these devices off. The bite not may be the least annoying to the puppy at this stage, but I've seen dogs manage to wriggle out of them (my friend's shepherd mix). Hopefully, after a few days the pup will get used to whatever is chosen and will settle down.
He is tolerating it better but still NOT happy! And it shows in his behavior!! He is being a very naughty toddler!!! And it doesnt help that the pain meds made him vomit! So not only is he irritated by the cone....he smells terrible! lol And he cant have a bath for at least another week. I did try washing his front feet but he was not to thrilled with that either.
When I called the vet about the vomitting(which has stopped) they stressed using the plastic cone and said it was the most effective for a puppy his age. So we are just going to stick it out. We were giving him some breaks from it but after a few times of taking it off and on, I decided it was less stressful to just leave it on. I cant wait til its all healed and we can get rid of this thing!!
