    2 Puppies to train

We have two 14 week old labs, Thunder and Lightning. We are going through the usual house training, crate training and biting issues that go along with having a lab puppy, just times 2. I am having a problem right now with them not wanting to sleep through the night. Last week we finally had them sleeping all night. What a relief to finally get a decent night's sleep. Then we took them into the vet to be spayed and had a little complication with Lightning. She had to stay in the hospital for the night while Thunder came home. Since that night we have not been able to get them to sleep past 4am. Any suggestions on what we can do? I was thinking they may be hungry since they are growing soooooo fast.

Wow, what's done is done, but a pup should never be spayed before 6 months, and ideally, to wait for a year or so.

I would just get back to the same routine, and maybe exercise them a little more at night so they are tired through the night.

Mine were good to go the night at about 9-10 months. And that's with taking up water about an hour before 10 pm bedtime and getting them out at 6 am. 14 weeks old is a bit too young to expect a long night, but they will get there

Are you crating them separately? If you aren't you should start ASAP, as time goes on they will become more and more bonded to each other and it will be tough to separate them.

We do crate them together, but do things with them separately like walks, playing etc. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I know that both my husband and I are really committed to do the best that we can for our little pups. We work opposite shifts so someone can be here in the early months most of the time. We do crate them during the day for an hour or so just so they get used to us leaving them. I didn't know about crating them separately. Thank you so much.

We put them to bed about 10pm as well. When they first came home we were up with them every 2 hours, then slowly extended the time until they were ok until about 6am. Thank you for the information and your experience.

they really really should be crated separately. as they age they will most likely need to be in separate crates for their own safety and it's better to start now. but good that they are getting separate walks and such. they need to learn to be "ok" alone in their crate.

they may need more exercise. but being crated together means when one wakes up they will wake the other so that will make sleeping thru the night harder.

Did your breeder talk to you about Litter Mate Syndrome? Here is a link to lots of information and advice.

These are rescue puppies, right? That's why they were spayed so young? I'm going to guess they are and good on you for taking them on, but, boy, you have your work cut out for you. Brave people you are.

Most likely one of them woke up for a reason at 4AM which woke the other one and now it’s becoming a habit. My two (same age as yours) do sleep crated separately in different rooms (each with one of my kids) but even so if one wakes up and fusses the other usually does too. If you can get them to the point of not only being ok with being in separate crates, but ok being crated by themselves that would be for the best, even if you don’t always make them be that way. The best way to start is to have two crates next to each other, then gradually move them farther and farther apart. On the other hand, you could just try cold turkey and be prepared for screaming

What are you doing with them at 4AM? If it’s not time to wake up then it’s a quick trip to go potty (no playing) and back to bed. You might have to ignore some fussing for a bit, but if you are consistent with not letting them eat and play until a time that’s good for you then they will eventually learn to sleep or at least be quiet until then. Mine (14 weeks today) have gone from about 11:30 until 7:30 or 8:00 although most mornings we do get them up at 6 when the kids get up for school. All our dogs eventually learn that breakfast is when the humans get up for the day, not when they do, LOL, which encourages sleeping in on the weekends.
