    Calming the "puppy crazies"??

Quincy is 6 1/2 months old and is really becoming a calm puppy.....except for in the evening!!! We go for our evening walk and when we get back he is wound for sound! Tears around the living room, chasing the cats and barking at them...just being obnoxious.
So what causes this?? And is there anyway to avoid it? He does this every evening no matter if he has been kenneled alot during the day or is we are home and he is out all day.

Well, you've learned that walks do not wear these guys out! It sounds like a case of the zoomies. Do you have an area outside where he can run around and get the zoomies out before you go inside? Does he get plenty of outside running around time during the day or before or during that evening walk? My older guy would get the zoomies many days or afternoons and I just encouraged him to run around (outside) and get it out. Go, Dog, Go! I've never seen my younger pup get the zoomies. If by evening you mean it's too late to be outside running around, I'd try to give him some active play time outside later in the afternoon to burn off some of his extra energy before the evening walk. Being out of his crate all day does not in itself give him exercise. Walks really do not wear them out. My older boy doesn't do the zoomies any more, I miss them!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

I know what causes it. He is a Lab puppy. I also find that after walks, even if I've been out for HOURS, my two will go nuts as soon as we walk in the door. I love watching my dogs get zoomies and have a good time! It's one of the reasons I have Labs. The joy!

I agree with all above, sounds like classic Zoomies and just after a walk is a typical time for them. In our case walks were off leash, in the bush and STILL Oban took zoomies when we got home. I think of them as sort of a last, "HUrrah, that was great, I don't want it to be over."

I encouraged them too. Stood some place safe where I would not get knocked over and yelled, "ZOOM, go, go, go." Assigning a name to an action is exactly what you do in potty training and thus you can get some amount of control over the action. Now I can incite zoomies when I want them, most of the time. I still can't completely control them or end them, such as after a swim, bath or hosing down.

Enjoy the zoomies while you can, they are an expression of joy and good health and youth. Outside is probably better than in your house though.

Maverick gets the zoomies too. I love watching AND listening to him! I agree, outside is better than inside and for your safety, stay out of the way

I agree with everyone else, but would also add that someday, when he is too old for the zoomies, you will look back and miss it.

I am laughing that it really has a name Our female never did this so its new to me. He does get run time in the yard but unfortunately by the time everything gets done and we get to walking, its dark when we get back...darn winter coming !! I will make an effort to get him more running time in the yard before we walk. I realize just being out of the crate doesnt mean he is get exercise, I guess I was comparing it more to a child being cooped up and then going wild. I am still laughing that everyone knew what I was referring too. Silly labs lol

It really is the best thing in the world to watch, their joy is contagious! Definitely enjoy them, it is a sad day when they stop doing this.
