    I outsmarted Sassy yesterday, LOL

I had taken the puppies out for what was supposed to be a walk in the neighborhood. After we got about a block, I decided to take them on a hike in the park instead. They had a great time exploring the fields and woods, but were getting hot (unseasonably warm day) so I took them over to the lake to cool off. I took them off leash so they could play in the water without accidentally drowning each other, LOL and they had a great time running and splashing. When it was time to go, Cookie came right over to be leashed up, but Sassy was having too much fun, and when she saw me with the leash went back out into the water to play some more.

They both do have a pretty good recall for being only 4.5 months, but I didn’t want to use a formal recall because a) if she ignored it, I wouldn’t be able to enforce it other than wading out into the water after her and b) if she did come, I had nothing to reward it with other than verbal praise since I didn’t realize we’d end up in the park (usually I bring treats for practicing off-leash time), which combined with putting the leash on would not be all that rewarding for the future and recalls are still a work in progress. So instead, when just calling her name informally didn’t get her to comply, I told her “Ok, you stay here but we’re going home now”, leashed up Cookie and started heading back for the trail. The look on Sassy’s face went from “Ha, ha, you can’t get me” to “Oh crap, don’t leave me!” and she came running right up to get her leash put on.

It was TOO funny - I’m still laughing about it.

Lol, thank goodness that works when they are little and sometimes longer with Labs! Maxx still panics if he thinks I am leaving him behind!

Congratulations. I know how good it feels to think you are smarter than a 4.5 month old puppy.

Cute! I don't know why you wouldn't want to wade out to get her! Chase might run after us, Lark would just say, "Bye, Mom!"

    Hahaha too cute!

My informal recall is "who likes cookies?"

Come to think of it, that works better than our formal recall!

Lol, it is awesome to know I am not the only one known to bribe a dog with cookies! Mine rarely get them but they sure know what they are. It is like saying "chocolate" to a woman with PMS!

    LOL!

When Murphy was little (well, smaller), I would take him out to go potty with the leash, but I'd let him run around off leash. When I'd go to pick up the leash to take him in, he'd sit down and refuse. I'd simply walk away and in about 5 seconds, there would be a puppy right at my side.

Now, whenever he slips out of his collar (because apparently he read books about becoming an escape artist), he wants to play "chase me". I usually just reach into my pocket, say, "I've got a treat!" and he's right by me once again.

I guess the name Sassy suits her pretty well
