    First puppy class

Oakley had her first puppy class today. She was all charged up to go while we were listening to the instructor but when they were let off leash to play she was a little timid. I was really hoping she'd play bitey face with the other pups so she could learn some bite inhibition. Anyway...maybe next time. The instructor suggested an Easy Walk Harness. Has anyone ever used one?

Puppy classes are so much fun! Don't be disappointed that she seemed timid, that is a lot of new things to take in all at once. Do you have any family or friends with fully vetted dogs that your puppy could have playdates with between classes? That would help with the bite inhibitions and with her confidence.

Oakley has been around my neighbors huge American bull dog but I think his size intimidates her. One of my friends has a small dog but he is blind and old so there's not any playing there. I'm going to start taking her to a puppy play class at PetCo once a week. We will get out a lot more now that she has had most of her shots. My son has a dog but they haven't met yet. Hopefully soon!

The more you take Oakley out and around dogs, I think the more her confidence level will build. Don't fret about puppy class, let your pup socialize or just be, listen to the instructor and practice at home. I remembered how balled up I would get when I took Ice. Fretting he wouldn't perform, when actually he was doing really well at home. Ice just wanted to see the other dogs when in class. My social butterfly.

Definitely go to the PetCo class. Think it will help both of you. Also look forward to hearing how Oakley does meeting your son's dog.

At Thor's first puppy class all he wanted to do was hide behind my legs. By the third week he graduated from the 'timid' puppy hour to the 'exuberant' puppy hour and was running around with the crazies. Just give Oakley some time to get used to the environment.

Puppy play time went great! Oakley was a little timid at first but she initiated play with a dog about her size and they played bitey-face for 45 minutes! She should sleep good tonight! Also found out I can take her to the dock diving pool and she can practice swimming. I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

That is wonderful! The more she gets out and about the better her confidence will be. You just might find yourself wishing you could have just a little of that puppy shyness back. I bet you will both do great!
